John Mecom?

With all of the posts about former Saints from the 60s, 70s etc, I was wondering if John Mecom is still alive & kicking & what he is doing these days. I live outside of Louisiana so I may have missed his passing. If he is still around, it would be cool to see him in the Parade next Tuesday. Love him, or hate him, he is ultimately responsible for today!

Mecom COULD have been a fine owner IF he had hired the right people to run the front office.
He needed a Bill Polian or Bill Parcells type to be President of the Saints and then hire a GM.
The Saints scouts and front office were lousy. Coach Tom Fears was a good coach, but, the front office operations were bad enough to ensure that Coach Fears never got enough talent to help the good players on the Saints back then.
I read all of this in Saints history books.

How old is mecom now? hell, benson is 82 and has owned the saints since he was 57. Mecom has to be that age or close. Especially since mecom was the original owner of the saints. yeah ole john mecom junior was the guy that took the saints to vero beach florida for spring practice if you recall so john could bring his yacht down there. wrong place for the saints to be. no business like sense at all in that. just look how well that worked out then. first off vero beach is dodgertown. i heard some stories about the players more worried about partying than practicing in those days. oh well, those days are over.

He was the youngest owner of an NFL franchise at the time. I think he was 27 in 1967. He should be around 70.

DAMN, i was about to say if he is not benson's age then he had to be just about under 30 then when he bought the team in 67. sure enough. damn, i could not imagine being an NFL owner that young. WOW.

they just did a story on him on wwl with interviews done after the NFCCG
He was benson's guest in his suite for the game and said he never felt like he left the franchise as winner until after that game
they said he was a river oaks resident. i know there is a river oaks in mandeville, but I know he was originally from texas so not sure where he resides

Did he by the team OR did his Dad buy him a playtoy?

Good story about him in the Houston Chronicle yesterday. I think he always lived in Houston, he has for sure since he sold the team.

Dude, his Mecom, Sr. made a vast fortune in the oil biz. Mecom, Jr. was only 27 years old when he became Saints owner. Mecom, Jr., owned the Saints, but his Dad's money paid for it.
Mecom, Jr. knew little about football at age 27. He needed a Bill Polian or Bill Parcells-type to run football operations for him, but, back in 1967, professional football was not developed enough to have Polian and Parcells-types available for hire.
