I simply do not understand why so many Saints fans are negative on this guy. He is a 3 time All American that has ammassed some 375 legitimate tackles in his collegiate career. Many of those tackles were for losses. He has double digit sacks & interceptions in his career & has outstanding range, speed, & size at linebacker. I paid very close attention to his play during the Sugar Bowl against LSU, & he was one of only two guys on his defense (the other being their corner back because Vernon Gholston was pushed all over the field) who could hold his own against LSU's offense. He had a BCS record 18 tackles in that game & had it not been for him LSU would have rung up 70 points on OSU.

A few reasons...

-NFL Fans in SEC Country don't get to see many Big 10 games so they don't see Big 10 LBs all that much, and when they do see them, an SEC School is beating the crap out of a Big 10 defense.

-Big 10 players are thought of as slow.

-All his stats are meaningless becuase it was against pitiful opponents.

AND....Saints fans are pretty sure that Vilma will have the MLB spot locked up for years (as soon as the Saints re-sign him).

Who says he has to play the middle? Who says Vilma has to play the middle? Conventional thinking, which is the only thing Groundhog Day Gibbs was any good at, says a guy has to play a certain position a certain way. That is what losers do. A guy with Laurinitis' range & speed can play inside or out. Same thing applies to Vilma. When you are a great football player you should be able play any of the three positions. With him & Vilma together there will be a lot of plays when you don't even need a third linebacker.

Vilma does. He has already tried playing out of position in the past and it did not work out so well for him or his team. It would not be wise to move your best defensive player out of the position he naturally best plays.

Laurinitis could not cover LSU's TE, Richard Dickson, in the '07 National Championship Game. What is he going to do against top-flight NFL caliber players?

I didn't realize Florida, LSU, USC, Texas, Michigan 3 times, Penn St., Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, & Mich. St. were pitiful opponents. Thanks for making my case.

I didn't know it was always the MLBs job to cover a TE during a play that uses a play action fake. I kinda thought it was the MLBs first job to make sure the RB who is being faked to doesn't have the ball & that he isn't the recipient of a "screen" pass after the fake. Usually you have a Strong-side LB for the Strong side & a Strong Safety for the Strong side.

Yeah, 17 tackles against LSU, huh? You're bound to get a lot of tackles when your defense can't stop the other team and get any 3 and outs for much of the game. The Suckeyes are overrated and so is Laurinitis. The "L" in Laurinitis stands for LOSER! His name should be spelled Loseritis!

B/c he's great if you like when people are tackled for 5 yard gains. He's a great college LB, but not physical enough for the NFL. Marcus Freeman, #1 on their team, is a better LB in my opinion.

I thought Penn st. was a good team, maybe if the rose bowl was not in L.A. they could have won

He can't shed blocks/isn't physical enough to play in the middle. I think he may be a solid WLB in the NFL, but I don't think he's worth the 14th pick.
