Is the QB position in the NFL simply 'luck of the draw'?

You look at names like Jamarcus Russell or Winston, Leaf, and RGIII and then turn around and look at names like Purdy, Brees, Brady, etc......
No matter how good they look on paper, is it just luck on picking one that actually turns out to be worth anything?

Yes, sometimes. Remember when Brees and Culpepper were both on the market and Culpepper was treated as the better QB... especially after Brees' surgery?

I’d say that’s the case for all positions. That’s why I think wanting to lose out for better draft position is for weak men.

This is a simple problem that plagues most sports franchises.
They get enamored with flashes of potential and start to have blinders to the overall body of work.
It's why you always see guys shoot up the draft boards after a combine or pro day workout. Combine that with desperate teams and coaching staffs trying to turn things around like addicts at a casino, the more they lose the more they are willing to risk it all because the next big hit is right around the corner to save the day.

Yes and no.
It’s partially the player, partially the organization & coach and partially the team. Jamarcus had no chance of succeeding with the Raiders. Mahomes is super talented, but he’s had the success he’s had because Andy Reid is a great coach and they had a really good team.
And a bunch of message board big mouths will always claim they know who will be great and who will be terrible. But we don’t. Nobody does.
