Your reality is non-existent.
It has to happen first.

Last season is bunk.

We have our hope; you have your expectation.

And the season before? And Seattle? And the defense ranked at the bottom of the league, even during the SB year?

We go through this every year with the same experts blaming the latest fired DC instead of a lack of talent.

Throw GW under the bus and bring in Spags who people swore up and down was a better fit with his zone scheme. Then spend half of last season with those same people making excuses for how shitty the defense was again. "They have to adjust to the new system," "you guys don't get it, Spags' defenses get better in the second half of the season" BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH... Then throw him under the bus and blame the system, of course.

Now its Rob Ryan's turn to be made to look like a moron who has no clue what he's doing, because he has mediocre(i'm being kind) talent.

I've been the bad guy the last 3 years for not having blind optimism about the D, I guess ill be that guy again.

Bump this if they're awesome and i'll gladly take the beating.

Hey, I've heard this spiel from you year in and year out.
It doesn't change.

I rather like my expectations.
And obviously, you like yours.

Let's just keep in mind that that's all they are.

Talk about the past all you want.
But if you're talking about the present, realize these aren't facts.

The thing worrying me most is that, although the 3-4 fits Galette's skillset better than as a 4-3 DE, he still has practically no experience at the position. Ditto for Tez (Illinois ran a 3-4, but he played mostly on the inside). Haralson will be a much better player than Smith would have been for us on the outside.

I also think that our DL won't be QUITE as good as some people think it will be, but it will still be a strength. Jordan will be a beast and Bunkley will be solid, but I'm going to wait until the regular season before I get excited over Jenkins (whom I was VERY happy that we traded up to draft), Hicks and especially Foster before I get too excited about them.

I'm not at all worried about Lewis turning things around. While he did have more talent around him in Pittsburgh than he does here, he's proven enough in games that count that he can play and will at least not be a liability. Fingers crossed that Greer stays healthy and Payton makes the right choice regarding Vaccaro/Jenkins.

I think a lot of people forget we were a top 5-10 defense a couple years ago. Top 20 this year isn't unrealistic. The x factor is Galette. The defense will be as good as he is.

I agree with this. I really think martez and Junior will be difference makers in this D. This is their time to shine

I think a lot of people here will be pleasantly surprised. The secondary will be better because f upgrades AND because this front seven will get pressure. I think will be in the top half of the league (top 16).

That's pretty much how I feel. We can be in the 20-25 range if he sucks. We could be around 10 if he produces 12+ sacks and the number of pressures typical with that sack total. He had 5 in limited snaps last year, and he'll have an improving, possible pro-bowler in Jordan taking up blockers for him, so he's definitely going to have the opportunities. Haralson on the strong side should provide mediocre play. Mediocre play is really all that we need with our offense, so I'm happy about him.

Thats a scary proposition if thats the case, though.

I know at times he's looked decent in limited snaps, but basically resting our superbowl hopes on a guy with less than 10 career sacks and injury issues is frightening.

Yep. I think Butler is a really similar player to Junior (with more experience), so it really sucks that our odds of having a productive jack were cut in half when he went down. I think Tez could be a solid backup with versatility to play inside or out, but I don't see him having the upside as the other two.

Scary thing is all 3 of our guys up front, 2 deep, have been commanding double teams several times a game and when they aren't doubled they get quick pressure.

Once we actually start blitzing for real(and the few times we did in preseason it worked great) there are going to be guys coming in unblocked and the backs are going to have to pick them up.

Teams are going to have a lot less time to tee off on us(especially when we make them one dimensional with our hopefully dramatically improved run d) which is a good thing because I still think the middle of the field will be open over the LBs and I'm not fully trusting PRob or Lewis yet. And I'll never trust Jenkins at safety.

I think the one thing that will once again carry over is that TEs will be our bane. But with an improved run d and pass rush and our offense clicking again with Payton back I think it will be hard for teams to be patient and keep taking the middle.

Butler was playing Sam with Wilson backing him up. Smith and Galette were our Jacks. Butler was going to be more of a cover and rush OLB, not the almost all rush one.

When Butler went down they actually moved Smith to the Sam(but then started putting Richardson there too and interchanging them).

Once Smith went down they grabbed Haralson to be the Sam. I don't think they fully trust Wilson yet. But Galette was also going to push and eventually take over the Jack spot from Smith.

Galette and Wilson getting hurt has severely slowed down the transition but it will be trial by fire in the regular season.

Scoring is the only thing that matters and I think we finish in the top half of the league on the defensive side and at least the top 3 on the offensive side.

Yards are for people that play fantasy. "Worst" d of all time my arse. We gave up the most yardage, not points.

Yeah, Galette/Butler would have been a great duo on opposite ends (Butler played on both sides in Dallas, so I figured Ryan might have mixed things up). Not going to even try finding the link, but I remember PFF actually gave Butler a positive grade against the run, so he wasn't as one dimensional as some may think. I kept trying to find his metrics in coverage, but had no luck. Even if he was subpar, having a pair of good pass rushers on the outside would have been a perfect fit for a team with an offense that can establish a solid lead and make opponents one dimensional.

I'm kind of hoping that in obvious passing situations, we simply put either Vaccaro or Jenkins on the opposing TE and let the other play center field.
