Here's the deal --
Yeah, you have some leverage over me now because of the bullshite franchise tag.
Well, IF you franchise me, next year I'll ask for anything I lose this year to be made up.
So, if I'm worth $20 this year (and presumably next year), but you f'ck/franchise me and I only get $14 million this year, next year -- when you can't franchise me -- I'll demand $6 million more from the Saints than any other team is willing to pay. And, that's IF I even entertain an offer from you.

That's not Drew's style. My guess is the Saints are trying to avoid the shite-fest the Colts got themselves into this year.

I'm not up to date on what language the new CBA contains but Walter Jones was franchised three years in a row by the Seattle Seahawks a few years ago. It used to be that players franchised for a third time got the average of the 5 highest paid NFL players at the highest paid NFL positions (which was QB in 2006).

Did some searching and found a ESPN article by John Clayton that covers the franchise tag:

Franchise tags: Although this was one of the last big issues being contested by the players, there will be no change in a team's ability to annually place a franchise or transition tag on a top player to retain his rights. Players were pushing for a system in which players could be franchised only once. That would free up Drew Brees of the Saints for free agency next year and stop the Colts from franchising Peyton Manning next year. Owners voted to move ahead with the deal without that change.
So it was the players that wanted to only be tagged once (or not at all which they tried to push for the named parties during litigation).
