A nice read from BleacherReport.com

quote:

Ryan has a plethora of pre-snap looks, adjustments and formations to utilize with the Saints defense this season. And the unit is young and hungry enough to be aggressive, which fits Ryan’s style beautifully.

quote:

Not only has Ryan used his play-calling to dial up the pressure on opposing quarterbacks, he’s found a way to get more out of the talent that was already on the roster. Of the 11 players who have played the most defensive snaps in 2013, only Vaccaro and cornerback Keenan Lewis are new to the team.

That means Ryan is responsible for Galette’s disruptive hybrid role as a linebacker and defensive end. Ryan is responsible for the emergence of Akiem Hicks, who was a defensive tackle last season and has learned to use his size and strength to bull rush offensive linemen from an end position.

I did. Rob Ryan's defenses have never been the problem on teams he's coached on. Before the Saints, he's been unfortunately paired with mediocre at best offenses, which often put his defense in tough spots. He seems to be the defensive equivalent to Sean Payton with his different schemes and varying ways of attacking offenses.

Now he has Sean Payton's brain to pick for different ways on how to attack offenses... this defense will only get better.

You should - it's a good read.

i think we can agree that sometimes Bleacher report gets it right.....but its a really rare occurrence.

Rob has completely made me believe in our defense. he deserves a raise imho.

It's the cool thing to hate it. One or two people made mention about it so now everyone dogs bleacher report

I think they have some pretty good reads a lot of time

You envisioned the Saints D going from #32 to #4?

I was optimistic they'd be a top 20.

I think I called top 15 with a shot at top 10(scoring D), but yeah to be top 5 so far is damn impressive.

And it was 31st to 4th(scoring D). Titans had the worst D last year.

This one I can buy into because it definitely looks like this scheme has unleashed the potential we saw in him.

This one is a little tougher for me to fully accept. Hicks is still very much a developing player. He was a rookie last year so I think a large part of his improvement this year can simply be chalked up to 1 year of NFL experience under his belt.

Bottom line, I agree that Ryan has brought a huge improvement to this defense, but you can't just carte blanche give him credit for everything.

Where he deserves credit is for actually playing these young guys with talent(though that can be partially chalked up to injuries also).

Spags refused to play the young guys much if at all.

Yeah I got the point but I like to throw that stat out there whenever possible because of the dumbness of the "worst defense ever" statement. We weren't even the worst defense last year in what matters.

It was nothing against you.

Dam, just realized both vaccaro and Malcolm blitzed on that play. Ballsy.

Yardage is the wrong thing to measure a defense by because a bad offense that gives their defense a short field to defend because of turnovers can make a defense look better than it is, and a really good offense that scores a lot can make a really good defense look bad because it gives up a lot of garbage yardage.

Bottom line - the Saints aren't giving up many points, which has meant a 5-0 start.

I honestly haven't checked it out lately and I do think they've been trying to become more legit. However, in the past for every quality article you'd click on there'd be 9 that were either incoherent fan rants or intentionally flaming/making ridiculous points to drive traffic with manufactured drama.

Only thing I can think of. He hasn't been a great D coordinator at any point. He then took the worst D in the league and made them good.
