I'm not going to get into a pissing contest about Jameis vs Haener, because we're looking at 2 different things.

The Saints know what they have in Winston, they don't need to take him for a test drive. They knew enough that they went and got Carr, but that has nothing to do with last night's game.

You have limited preseason games, you know Kamara is out the first 3 games, you know Thomas hasn't played much in a couple of years. You have 2 rookies, Kendra Miller at RB, and AT Perry, who maybe you want to see if you can get some legit production out of. I can certainly see the coaching staff tell their experienced #2 QB- "look, I don't need to see you run through your progressions, I know what you can do. What I need to see is if Perry can step up, and become a factor on the field. Not as the 3rd guy in the route, I want you to target him. If he's open, get it in there. If he's covered, see if he can work open, see if he can make a play on a 50/50 ball.

Same thing with Miller- run him, throw him swing passes, throw him a wheel route. I need to see if this kid can step in and give me 15+ plays, maybe more if we need to.

Now, with Haener that's not going to be the case. You want to hand him the offense and see if he can make reads, see if he can extend plays if needed, see if he can look off defenders and move the ball. You need to see if he's a camp arm, a practice squad guy, or someone you may want to keep on the roster and develop.

Looking at the Chargers, Stick played ok, but if I'm the coach I don't want to see him running around a lot. I want to see him stand in and read, and make throws. He's not my replacement for Herbert, but I want to know if he can run the offense well enough that Herbert can get dinged and miss a couple games, and we can still be fluid.

That's just the way I see preseason games. I don't think anyone really cares if you win or not, what you want is figure out what your guys can do.
