How did we wind up with Headley over Gillikin?

This to me is the most puzzling thing in recent Saints history.
How did this happen? Does anybody know the story?
With today's scouting and advanced stats / metrics, its seemingly impossible that this joker is on an NFL roster.
Lou Headley has got to be the worst player on an NFL roster in the past 15 years.

It’s called DA and his Special Teams Coach inability to evaluate talent

Looks like he’s 0 for 2 on the players he picked this year.

I was vocally for keeping Wil, but at least we saved a decent amount of cap space and got a late pick for him, and at least Blake doesn't seem to have any glaring flaws other than he's now skittish.
With Headley, the guy has terrible form, his kicks are consistently low, short line drives with high school type hang time, and he sucks at placing it inside the 10. It makes zero sense.
If you compared Headley to the Jaguars punter last night, it was like comparing Michelangelo's "David" to the huge black hairpick that was installed in NOLA. Just night and day in terms of form, height, hang time, placement, etc. Their punter even made a key 4th down throw.
Since I was tuned out all preseason I assumed that maybe Gillikin was injured or something and that keeping him was a huge risk. But no, turns out he's currently top 5 or top 10 in the league in every important punting metric.

From what I recall, it did seem like Hedley's preseason outperformed Gillikin's 2022 season and probably played a factor in the decision. The killer in this is they apparently did not factor in players getting better between their 2nd & 3rd season.
Also, as bad as Hedley has been, his net punting avg is still 3 yards better than Gillikin this season (39.9 yards to 36.4 yards).
Hedley also has 13 of his 35 punts downed inside the 20, with only 2 TBs

That 32 yard pin at the 18 nearly won the game yesterday

The same way we ended up with Groupe over Lutz
