I would think that someone regarded as the top safety in his class (coming out of college) would not need this long to learn.

Problem with this is that he played corner in college but because of a slow 40 time he projected as a safety.

I think this was a huge mistake. He seems to have all the tools to be a very good man corner and showed that in his rookie season. He was making more and more plays each week. He has great ability at reading a single receiver and reacting to what he is doing.

In his 3 years as safety he has been shown to not be able to diagnose a play well and is often late or takes bad angles. The sum of the problem is that he can focus well on a single thing, but given too many choices his decision making process breaks down.

I really hope he can turn it around this year, but if not I think he is done. I really wish they would have left him at corner. Then this wouldn't be a problem.

PRob shown he can keep up with the fastest receivers, he just needs to turn his God damn head more often.

yeah, no doubt. I remember how bad he got blasted for his game vs. Dez Bryant this past year. Don't get me wrong it was brutal for the most part but Bryant has the ability to make anyone look bad covering him. But towards the end of the game in overtime, PRob jumped a the route on a third and short and the pass went incomplete. We get the ball back and go onto win the game.

Quickest way to boost run defense is to score early and often. Our run defense sucks last night year but we were often behind which made it much worse.

yep, especially in the early part of the season. We couldn't run the ball on offense so our drives were shorter. That Kansas City game is a good example.

the D looked gassed in the 4th quarter but all you would see mostly on this board was how bad Roman Harper sucks or frick this defense!!!!

not saying they don't deserve some blame but again they get too much in my opinion. Harper is just a guy some of our fans love to hate.

In a league that's going to more and more 4-5 wides, and rookies are coming into the league throwing for 4000 yards, there's absolutely no excuse for the Saints to continue going into every season trying to figure out ways to hide Roman Harper in coverage.

Yea, that's what their doing. Harper has pics of Payton an Tom Benson making out. You uncovered it, good job.

My thoughts are they think White is going to play one of the S spots along with Jenkins. IAQ and Bush as reserves. White may play Free and Jenkins moved to strong. White was coming on as a player before the injury. If they think he can do it, I'm on board. Anything to get Bill Cosby off the field.

Roman Harper usually is not within the same area code as the guy he's "covering." Got to go.

I think it is more we are stuck with what we have capwise- can't afford to overhaul them this year. Expect some draft competition though. They'll be some 3rd Rders that could push for reps. Of course Vaccarro would be a huge statement pick. Don't expect that but wouldnt be a shocker either. For all of us IAQ looked better last year. We'll see what happens.

There were several personnel moves last year that could be put on Spags that led to the D disaster...

-why no more IAQ sooner when our eyes see better play?

-why was Fatass Ellis kept in, especially after playoff elimination? His non future here was clear

-why was Mack cut and White pushed in waaaay too soon? He was so bad Mack was later brought back and the improvement was obvious.

-PRob was prolly the most misfitted to zone play out of any player. Sumpin different coulda-shoulda been done.

I really hope they will designate Harper as a June 1st cut but the smart thing is to wait untill next year. I really think Harper will play on obvious running downs and Bush on passing downs. Jenkens just looks lost at FS. Only his third year but its not clicking as of yet. hope he gets it right because he is a great player with alot of talent.

Malcolm, I hardly see it as a starting free safety at all.

JMO

Harper they could use in RR's system in some ways I'm sure as they are stuck with him for one more year.
Jenkins I'm sure they have reviewed every single play and have graded him accordingly.
Just from sitting on the couch and watching him the last two years only leds me to say he SUCKS at FS.

Everyone in this thread will be very surprised how good a D can look when the offense is playing well and consistent. If if the offense is consistent, bank on 10 wins.

Adding a corner like Lewis will definitely help the secondary. He is big, tall, quick, and knows the 3-4 having played under the best. Obviously, he can cover. I think PRob improves in the slot, but he has no ball skills.

Someone posted that they though Corey White would move to safety. He did play safety in college. I think Jenkins has been more of a liability at safety than Harper because he is the last line of defense. We know Harper is below average in coverage, but we expect Jenkins to not be. They both take poor angles and make the wrong decisions. The only thing guaranteed to help that is for the front seven to get better.

I agree with everything you said, but this
quote:

He played CB in college, but was projected to move to safety in the NFL.
quote:

The Saints certainly don't mind taking players from small schools and White, who has 4.4 speed and great leaping ability, filled the bill in the fifth round. Was projected by most scouts as a strong safety, but the Saints will put him at corner -- his college position.

White was a safety at Samford.

Jenkins is definitely the weaker safety. The staff loves Harper, he's not going anywhere.

In addition to the link I posted above...
quote:

Former Samford cornerback Corey White is considered an up-and-coming safety prospect by the NFL.
LINK

quote:

Big, baby-faced, confident, competitive FCS cornerback lacking the speed, quickness and change of direction to stay attached to NFL receivers in man coverage. Best chance to make a roster could be as a strong safety and will have to prove his worth on special teams.
LINK

quote:

e. Good instincts and physicality as a run defender, which should aid in his transition to safety. A projection to safety, as he played cornerback throughout his collegiate career.
LINK

quote:

At Samford in Birmingham, Alabama, White played cornerback, starting the past two seasons.
LINK

And from the Samford website

quote:

Samford cornerback Corey White was selected by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of the 2012 National Football League Draft Saturday afternoon.

Need me to post more, or is that enough?

White seems like he can develop very nicely at CB right now and with Prob possibly not developing like he should and Jabari being the short guy and salary getting high and expiring. No need to switch him now imo.

well he played 2 years at safety.

A rare occasion when I think we are both correct.

Well, apparently he was most recently at CB. If he truly had 4.4 speed, why on earth would he project at Safety.

The scout reports said he was tight in the hips and couldn't turn and run in man on man coverage in the NFL.
Because of his good size they thought he would transition to safety.
I remember the 1st thing the saints FO said after he was drafted was "no, he's gonna play corner".

Possibly. Most likely he played every where in the secondary, depending on the situation.
