Holder: Penalty problem could become pandemic if New Orleans Saints ignore ills

Defensive end/linebacker Junior Galette said on a scale of 1-10 that he only gave Payton an eight. I'm not buying that. Why? Because there were an indescribable 28 penalties called with 22 of them being accepted.
Rightfully so, Payton unloaded anger and fury at anyone who would listen in his postgame press conference. It reminded me of when Payton went no-holds barred following last year's debacle in St. Louis when Payton said he had "seen enough" of former left tackle Charles Brown and told kicker Garrett Hartley to find his own ride home, figuratively speaking.
"That was painful to watch," Payton said. "I don't recall, I can't recall ever a game with that many penalties. And here's the thing: Most of the ones I saw were good calls. So this isn't about a crew calling a lot of penalties. This is obviously something I've got to do a better job with.
"We'll find ourselves at short end of a game and then wonder about our offseason goals and what happened. We won't know when exactly it happened, but here in a preseason game, I lost track. I lost track."
Payton continued, "It's the first sign of a team that has no discipline. That's the first sign of poor coaching. It's first sign, along with the quarterback-center exchange. Next question."

"I've got to do a better job of that," Payton said. "It'll start on Sunday. It'll start on Sunday."

Could of not had a better answer to that question.

He also brought up that we had 5 takeaways in the 4th quarter but were only leading by 7.

I think the refs were flag happy for sure, but there's no excuse for 26 flags at all.
Payton's gonna destroy them in practice.

Sean said exactly what should have been said, that many penalties is unacceptable. But really you have a lot of young players in key positions, you are going to have a lot of penalties starting out. It's a serviceable issue, but realistically we will be committing stupid penalties early in the RS too.

McClown did look like garbage. He is a more experienced Kilgore.

I knew it. Last night's flag fest was mandated by the Attorney General. #fairplay

I agree that the rampant flags this preseason are annoying, but ask yourself this, is it more or less annoying than watching the Seahawks commit an uncalled penalty on every single play en route to beating us twice and winning the Super Bowl?

I'd rather the penalties be called consistently and fairly.
Want the flags to go away? Play within the fricking rules.
Payton was right. Just about every flag was a blatant penalty. You just can't play like that.

when I heard Payton make the comments about how he agreed with most of the calls I didn't know what to think.
But think of how many penalties came from guys who are fighting to make a roster spot as opposed to the veterans. Doesn't make it acceptable but I think you won't see as many flags when the veterans get out there more.
a big handful of penalties could also be from rookies who are trying to adjust to life in the NFL. shite happens.
the officiating has become a lot more annoying though the last few years. Nothing will change my mind on that. I don't know how these guys can play defense any more.
they've said that they are going to be harder on defensive backs when these guys have already lost a lot of advantages.
I understand the concussion thing and the big hits over the middle. But some of these other tick tack fouls like illegal contact occurring on the opposite side of the field from where the play is going.. yeah that's horsehit.
or illegal hands to the face called on a D-lineman? You've got to be kidding me. That is one of the least consistently called penalties today. The O-lineman hardly ever get called for it.
