The rule is it's a penalty for a forcible blow to the head or neck area. That hit was clearly to the neck area. It's a penalty according to the rule book, and one the refs are focussing on.

Plus Mike Peirira agrees with the call, so I do too.

Agreed. Also justice for the no call on the safety.

The rules is don't go high. If you can't see he targeted the upper body then you are blind. It is the rule period and will be called everytime. F-49ers they deserved every bit of this beat down the score should not have even been close. Turn in you Saints fan card man, if you think that was a bad call.

On this slow-motion replay it looks to me like a legal hit. I know plenty will disagree and have disagreed, but this strikes me as a football play. It's not like a clear-cut clothesline at the neck or a blow to the head. This does not seem to me to be the kind of play these rules have been created to protect against.

Hitting a QB in the neck is not a legal play. Regardless of his intent that's where his bicep/arm hit.

He meant to clothesline him. Intentional and dirty as shite. He could've had the sack, fumble and win just by getting him in the mid body. I guess he had to keep it real.

It's right at the neck...why is this even a discussion

Good call and he twisted his helmet on the way down.

if a Saints defender got called for that this place would have exploded

frick them. I've seen jerry rice fumble the ball across the goal line and it be ruled a touch down against the saints.
I've seen a team miss a field goal and have it called good against us.

Props for sucking it up and posting the .gif. It won't make you very popular among your fellow Saints fans but at least you can hold your head high as a honorable fan.

Not sure why it wouldn't be popular -- it clearly supports the call.

A video of a guy getting hit in the chest supports a call of blow to the head? I know things are a little backwards in LA but come on.

It most definitely was the right call. If they're calling it for simply touching the QB's helmet, coming up under the face mask should be called too.

If you think that's the chest area I'd hate to see the women you date.

When it happened live I thought we caught a huge break. But now after slowing down the GIF, you can see the defender's bicep smashing Drew's chinstrap. That is clearly "neck area" as defined by the rule book.

You could argue that the rule is dumb, but you can't argue that the rule was not broken on this play.

I don't give a crap whether it was a good call or not. That team has caught more breaks against the Saints in my 36 years of watching than you'd believe. The Jerry Rice fumble at the 2yd line TD is still not squared by this call. In fact, I wish it was a worse call.

Oh god, please don't remind me of that. I was 8 when that happened, one of my first memories of watching the Saints.

Yeah, this is coming from a linebacker; that was a clear clothesline tackle to the neck of the QB. Uncalled for, that was the same type of horseshite play that injured Payton Manning. Any time the full force of a running arm tackle is applied to the neck area, it is a severe risk of paralyzing a player. I don't care who you are, what sport you are playing, that type of activity should be illegal. Most 49ers fans are all thug POS's anyway, of course they think it's a good idea to run around decapitating their opponents. They're like a band of Mexican cartel members.

This is the same team that got away with breaking Pierre Thomas's jaw in that playoff game. I hope their entire city falls off into the Pacific Ocean.

Along with Oaktown.

I hope it's the worst call in the history of the NFL! frick the salary cap cheating 49ers in their loose buttholes. Karma from 20 years ago is a biiiitch!
