Another point worth considering: Houston is one of the best running teams in the league. They were 7th overall last year and had the league's top rusher. It shouldn't be at all surprising that a great running team had a good day going against a very new D-Line.

Hopefully Franklin gets back quickly and we continue to gel.

Like who?

It generally involves having and PAYING multiple highly talented pass rushers.

Aren't you the one who said there were other teams albeit a few who could do this? You should know.

how many teams in the NFL can get consistent pressure with only their front 4? answer- a handful at best

so, again, do we not strive for this??????

No I don't. Hence why I said at best there are a handful of NFL teams who can do it consistently. You see it way more in college where teams can just stockpile beastly d linemen.

even counting teams who run a 3-4. let's call a rushing LB their 4th guy for the 4 man front argument ok? Just off the top of my head teams who i have seen get pressure with front 4, Dallas(demarcus ware anchoring the rush), Green Bay, Steelers, Atlanta(abraham, not sure how edwards plays out this year), chargers, colts ( with freeney), vikings(jared allen)not sure about giants or bears(have not watched them yet)anymore so we can leave them out, even though the bears have peppers. That could change but that is what I saw last year and this year in preseason so far. Of course that is subject to change. That is just off the top of my head. I could be missing other teams. What I am saying is they get pressure with front 4 even if there is only ONE stud pass rusher.

vikings, colts, bears were not very good at getting to the qb with only 4 last year (considering they are all 4-3 defenses I'd say its a handful or less)

atlanta was pretty good, but they'd bring pressure as well...and then completely sucked when it counted

I think you're looking into this a little too much. Houston runs a special cut blocking type of run play most of the time. Most of the time it leaves the DE to crash in and make the stop, but if he's just a little out of position you'll get burned and it'll be up to the secondary. What happened last night was time and time again the DE wasn't in position and then the secondary whiffed tackles, ala Greer. Gdubs will take care of this come the regular season game, and most teams don't run the cut block. We'll be fine.

I agree, I think we will be fine, even just chalk this up to a bad performance and move on. But I did just want to comment on one thing.

"We didn't show them anything" is freaking ridiculous. Teams DO watch other game film besides the actual game that is played. I agree that staying a little vanilla helps some, but come on man.

yeah it was a preseason game

plus, we will have a couple real games this year where our D gets torched. that's the fricking NFL

the saints may have a good D, but we don't have the 01 ravens' or 85 bears' D

How many times we were outside of a 4-3 base package or variation (nickel/dime)?

How many times we ran a zone dog?

How many times we brought more than 6 guys?

How many times a safety came off the edge or through a gap?

Exactly.

I knew that watching the game, and I hated it. I understand why, but I still hated it. It was like watching Gary Gibbs "Bend-but-don't-break...well-break-a-little-but-not-all-way...ok-well-break-completely-but-make-sure-they-hurt-their-feet-while-they're-stomping-on-us defense."

I've stated before, I'm not worried, I'm just pissed at the lack of effort I saw.

This was glaring on one play when Tate ran inside the saftey off the edge for a big play. I'd say saftey off the edge three to five times in that game. That said, I'm not worried. Would I have liked a different outcome sure but in the end who cares about preseason.

you're right. They would run right at Ellis each time, double team him and drive him literally 5 yards off the ball each time, then cut the back side DT, Rogers and Franklin (thats how Franklin got hurt), and the backside DE was getting seal blocked each time (Smith). As far as LB's, Vilma was in front of the play and got caught up in the blockers once the runner took the first cut to go behind the center block and Casillas was getting blocked by a backside T or TE and couldn't get off the blocks in time. Herring was playing on the line each play so he was out of the play before it began.

But the fact of the matter is, the Saints played a base defense and didn't show anything special, but Texans played a base offense and didn't show anything special either. So player vs. player, they whooped us good up front. That IS concerning.

Does this mean he can't turn things around by the regular season, or that Houston will beat us down in week 3? No, but I really would have liked to see our stud DL win some individual battles in this game.

I agree with then posts about our D. We showed little..and why should we? When are starting 11 is in and we are running our usual mix of blitzes..we will be fine. Offense is another matter. The O line is not strong. They are letting way to much pressure get to Brees and he...LOOKS LIKE CRAP. I love the man...but he has not had a good game since the Super Bowl. No one can tell me he is "saving it" He is pushing and forcing and carrying the weight of the team on his shoulders and he needs to stop. Lets see what we can do with the running game...after all we spent the draft picks and we paid our interior linemen the money.

THANK YOU!!! this is EXACTLY what i was trying to say last night but couldn't put it quite so eloquently... thanks....

the whole "vanilla" defense argument doesn't hold water, at least to me, because the Texans were being "vanilla" on offense, as well, and for the same reasons, but we still got punched in the mouth all night long....

I know it is pre-season but it was a little discomforting seeing us get gashed like that. I have faith GW will get things cleaned up.

This is my exact thought. Preseason or not, it's not good to look THAT bad defensively, especially against the run. But it it preseason and I won't worry about it until I see it during a real game. For now, I'm only slightly concerned/discouraged and, well, that's what preseason games are for. To identify weaknesses and fix them. That beating could do more for us in the long run than shutting them down and blowing them out.

i guess, but considering how important and what implications a loss in the first game could have, i'd rather see us playing at peak performance now rather than after a couple of games....

that's why it's so much of a concern for me, i guess.... one game, in theory could be the difference between being in the dome in the postseason or being in Lambeau in January....
