I don't get why everyone is opposed to 3-4 guys?!?? The 4-3 we field hasn't done jack sh** so why not change it up if we could land a great 3-4 DC? Grant is really a 3-4 end, and this is a great LB draft class. Fujita played the 3-4, Vilma could move OLB. Sign Scott to play mlb and draft the other
We barely have 3 competent Linebackers to field a 4-3 and you want to run a 3-4?
A 34 is a major shift. We don't have the personnel, and more importantly, the big money players we have on Defense (Vilma, Sedrick Ellis, Will Smith) don't fit at all in a 34. Sure, maybe Charles Grant would make a good 34 DE, but he's never played in a 34 at any level.
We aren't switching to a 3-4, at least not under Payton.
Hell, we couldn't even switch to a 4-3 Tampa 2 if we wanted to because of personnel.

Alejandro will show up any minute to say that Gibbs did a better job with the defense this season than Payton did with the offense.
Personnel-wise it's a legitimate argument. Gibbs' defense wasn't the reason we lost to Washington, Minnesota, Tampa or Chicago. Given the talent he had to work with I think he deserves a solid "C". Payton probably deserves a "B" but in the cluth his offense sucked and was more like a "D". If Payton had called the right numbers in crunch time of the aforementioned games, the Saints would be getting ready to play this weekend.
Also, the Saints' defense had more clutch game-winning stops and turnovers (Tampa Bay, San Diego, Atlanta) than the Saints offense had game-winning drives. Even in a lot of the games we ultimately lost, the defense had some huge stops that gave the offense the chance to pull it out (@ Denver, @ Tampa, @ Chicago). That point is obviously a little more hazy because the only reason we were in the San Diego and Denver games was b/c the offense was playing lights out. But on the other hand, the only reason we were in the Chicago and both Tampa games was b/c the defense was playing lights out.
Still gladd Gibbs was fired though.

You are aware that the Saints have as many dollars invested on the defense as the offense. If Gibbs didn't have a say on Jason David, KK, Young, Harper, renewal of the monster contracts for Grant and Smith, then he doesn't deserve to be a DC in the first place.

Mike Nolan would be perfect, imo.

you can always go from the frying pan to the fire but after the way this D has been cooked, burned, and fried the last few years I am ready for a new recipe at least. The odds of it turning out better with a new DC at the stove has to be better.
Romeo implemented 3-4 at Cleveland but as NE DC they showed a lot of different looks. I don't think hiring him mandates a 3-4 implementation.

Hopefully they don't get Richard Smith who was here in Houston.

Sean McDermott, Eagles DB Coach is a good suggestion. Just implementing a Jim Johnson style D would be fun to see. After the miniscule times there was ever a blitz this season I would be cussing at the TV "THAT is how ya do it!".

Gibbs Fired!!!!!
WOW!!! These bandwagons can take their time reaching their destination, but they do work:
The Fire John Brady Bandwagon got Brady whacked last year finally...
and today the Gibbs Must Geaux Bandwagon will get the Saints a new DC finally.
See ya Gary- I hear that UThug's 16 year old coach has some vacant spots on his staff, maybe you could head to Knoxfart!!!

I'm sure Crennel COULD run a 4-3, but virtually everywhere he's been, he's been trained in the 3-4. With the Giants, Patriots and Browns, having a prominent role with the Defense, he ran the 3-4. If Romeo comes, he's running the 3-4. Period.
Why would you hire someone who specializes in something and ask them to do something completely different. There are guys like Mike Nolan who have ran every system and are very versatile coaches, but Romeo is a 3-4 guy.
Now let's look at personnel:
Will Smith: Just got a HUGE contract, so we cannot cut him for at least 2 years. He's probably too small to be a 3-4 DE, and he's too big to be a standup 3-4 OLB.
Sedrick Ellis: Best suited to be a 3-Tech DT. He was just drafted in the 1st round. Wouldn't fit well at NT in a 3-4, IMO. This one is very debatable though, much more than Will Smith or Vilma.
Charles Grant: Could probably play 3-4 DE, but never has consistently at ANY level, be it HS, College or Pro.
Scott Fujita: played in a 3-4 at ILB and was not bad, but not great either. When he came to the Saints he commented that he didn't particularly like playing in it. He's not a good enough pass rusher to play OLB in a 3-4, so he would have to be one of the Inside Linebackers.
Jon Vilma: He's gone if we go to a 3-4. He hated playing in it in NY, and on top of that wasn't particularly good at it. He won't re-sign with us.
So we would have to:
Try and get rid of Will Smith.
Get another 3-4 DE.
Get at least 2 Pass Rush OLBs (Probably 3, we'll need backups)
Get another ILB to go along side Fujita.
I would be SHOCKED if we switched to a 3-4. Its much easier to go from 3-4 to 4-3 than the other way around. We'll either get a guy that is very versatile like Nolan or one of the Ryans (those guys have run the 43, 34 and 46) or a strict 4-3 guy.
Sean McDermott would be a great choice IMO.
