Everyone is talking about our poor secondary, but let's talk about our pass rush

The general consensus is that our secondary downright sucks. While I agree that they aren't a perfect unit, I think what we have now is at least servicable. The thing people tend to forget about is that a steady pass rush will always make a secondary look better. Same thing goes when there is no pass rush. You can't expect CB's to be able to blanket a receiver for that long. When I look at the replay, I see some bright moments for our secondary. Not so much for our d-line. I know the Kikaha loss hurt us in terms of pass rush but do we have to do something about the abysmal pass rush and I think that in turn reflects positively on our secondary also.

Again there can be no pass rush when Byrd is 20 yards deep, the corners are 10 yards off, you don't cover backs until they catch the ball, and you run the same exact two tired blitzes the other team figured out by the second series.
If you give them the quick passes damn near every snap the line has no time to get pressure.
It was the same exact problem as last year with Allen running the secondary.
You could make the no pass rush argument in 2014 when we lacked an interior push, but 2015 and so far through preseason and game 1 of 2016 it's the scheme.

I felt like they were getting to Carr on some plays but he did a good job of evading pressure and getting outside the pocket.

I understand where you're going but when's the last time we could say we truly had an elite pass rusher?

They blitzed Robertson a few times, but I have to say, Carr did a very very good job extending plays. I want to see how we do against Manning who doesn't move as much.
Also, Rankins and Kakaha were supposed to be our two biggest pass rushers and they are injured. If they were here, im sure it would be a little better.

Exactly. Carr is one of the most athletic QBs in the league. I think our interior pressure from Fairley and Davidson will show more with these true pocket passers. (Ryan and Winston, Eli) we will continue to struggle with the guys that can get outside of the hash and throw.

Jordan and Galette both had double digit sacks in 2013.
Galette had double digits in 2014 while Jordan had 7.5 (and that was the year they lacked interior pressure).
Jordan had double digits last year making it 2 out of 3 years with that.
We have guys that can rush. Kruger had more pressures than Watt last year.
But when you give them only 2 seconds to rush most snaps it's extremely hard to get home.

We struggle with mobile guys because we let them break contain (but so do most teams in the league). That I can't tell if it's scheme and teaching or players.
But no matter who we have rushing it happens so I think Billy boy is teaching poor containment.

Ok.....we don't have one.

Need to start pressing these receivers. This zone shite don't work as we can see.

What's worse than playing this soft zone is playing 10 yards off the receivers (and that is not an exaggeration) AND having Byrd 20+ yards deep (also not an exaggeration).
I get you don't want to give up the big play but you give up EVERYTHING underneath and take Byrd out of every play (so blame Allen for him being literally invisible because he's so far back you never see him on the screen).
You cannot generate pressure playing like that, and I know people want to blame Breaux going down, the young corners, and no pass rush but the fact is Oakland figured it out in the second half.
They did let Breaux play mostly up on the receivers from what I recall but mostly every other corner on most plays was guarding that 10 yards.
We literally never covered a back until he caught the ball, gaining AT LEAST 5 yards every catch.

I think they gave up on Spller a little too soon. With his speed and moves I'm sure he can pass rush. Just tell him his new job is to go get the ball before he can run with it.
Boom. Instant pass rush.

Yeah but the thing is, until Breaux went down, it was freakin' working. That's what's so damned frustrating. Breaux goes down ten minutes later, we probably win, pass rush or no.

we can talk about everything on the defensive side of the ball because we have the same cast of clowns that has led our defense to be the laughing stock of the nfl most years.until payton gets rid of vitt, johnson, etc, there will be no improvement.

They were shorthanded and got blatantly held all game. Our guys aren't savvy enough to sell it in action.

I don't wanna talk about it
