You see, apparently the media has put the rest of the country outside of La. and the Gulf Coast into a zombie-like trance. 9th my cornhole.
Firstly:
If the N.Y. Phucking GIANTS can WIN the Super Bowl after what we did to them in the Dome last year - ANYBODY can win it.
And we all know if not for a mistimed single coverage defense in SF - the Saints would have beaten the Giants again in the Dome for the NFCC, and possibly the Patriots in the Super Bowl.
Secondly:
Yes, Payton being gone will hurt; but Carmichael filled in for him last year, plus we have Vitt, Spags and Cromer - all former head coaches or head coaching material to lead and set an example for this team.
Carmichael is a great OC, and Spags a great DC.
We will be fine.
Thirdly:
We lost Meachem, but replaced him with: Arrington, Toon and Morgan.
We may lose Vilma, but are replacing him with three new LBs, plus have Casillas returning.
We signed three new D-linemen, plus returning Wilson.
We may have one of the best special teams units in the league.
Fourthly:
Intangibles
Steve Gleason
Bounty crap
League wide hatred.
We are in the same breath with Green Bay, New England, Balt, and SF.

It shows how hard people swallow the media these days. We have lost the art to THINK for ourselves.
Or maybe just maybe, people think that losing your head coach just migggggght have an impact and everyone from new orleans is looking at the situation with gold colored glasses.

This vote reflects two things: 1. If you’re not a Saints fan and you look at what Goodell did to us with the suspensions you’re likely to believe the team is in disarray and could never play in the Super Bowl. 2. Another factor, combined with the first point is the “hate the Saints” factor that has been nurtured by the media. This has been stunning to me and therefore I guess the media’s bread is buttered by support Goodell and not the Saints (you think?). The media has not defended the Saints even as more and more information is released about the weakness of Goodell’s claims.
However, some good points have already been made – The Giants won the SP last year (come on). Also, the voting in each state is a lot closer than the overall % indicates for the nation.
In reality, if no one were looking I’d probably vote no, because the chance of any team making all the way is so small (shite, again the fricking Giants won last year).

It'll have an impact, but this team has too much talent and leadership to not be considered a contender.

We shall see.
I have just been led to believe that the head coach plays an extremely critical role within a football team but who knows maybe you are right and Brees will save the day.

So they think we are going to ditch our offensive philosophy or something? The system is in place. The pieces are still there.
Indy made it to the super bowl with Jim Caldwell in his first year, Miami Hurricanes won the national title with Larry freakin Coker in his first year.
Sean Payton's system isn't going anywhere.
We might not win it all, but to act like we aren't a contender is retarded.

It won't be just Brees. Remember Carmichael finished out the year calling the plays after Payton got injured. The area I think he'll be missed is game planning, so I'm hoping to get better support from our defense this year so we don't have to blow everyone out to win.

As do I. Even tho he missed 3 games or whatever as the play-caller, he was still at the game, in the OCs head, and working 24/7 between games to have everyone ready.
The NFL is so balanced from top to bottom that the slightest issue (whether it be an injury or whatever) is enough to tip the scale in one direction or the other. I think him not being there is going to be a much bigger issue than some of you think.
Other HCs especially are going to take the NOLA game very seriously (well they obviously would anyways) just bc of how it looks to lose to a team without a HC. You know every HC out there is hoping NOLA does terrible this year. Haha it looks very bad for HC's if a team can lose it's HC and still go out and whoop arse.

Just looking at the map I can taste the nations fear of what is brewing down here in the Big Easy.

The people voting no probably still don't consider a 9-7 team as a Super Bowl contender. Either that, or they don't think the Saints can win 9 games.

Currently, 72% No, 28% Yes.
so from this number we can deduce that roughly 65% of sports fans are idiots
got it

I love reading how delusional you guys get over here, but no way are the Saints not contenders with that roster. As long as they get in anything can happen. ATL is your bitch and Carolina hasn't done anything to improve its defense. The South is still yours to lose.
Don't know if I would expect much with Vitt in the postseason, particularly if they're not a high seed and are on the road, but if a 9-7 Giant team can do that, and they're being considered as contenders this year, then even without Payton you should be as well.
I don't think it's a Super season because without that high seed you struggle and Vitt could be clowned in the playoffs (IMHO), but no one wants a piece of your team.
I hope you guys realize that even being considered as a possible contender after losing your superstar coach is a testament to how good your team is. Most teams would pray for 6 wins after such a tumultuous offseason.

classy post
FWIW I don't think its Vitt I'm worried about as much as how Spagnulo and Carmichael gameplan.

Maybe Coach Switzer of the world champion cowboys would agree with you...but I doubt it.

Well the game plans are probably already done. That's part of what the coaches do in the offseason. The staff will have to make the proper adjustments without him.

Whaaa?
Ahh to be young again.
Even if the whole nation "feared" the Saints (and I can assure you, that's not the case) - it doesn't matter. The whole nation doesn't play on an NFL roster. No one on an NFL roster fears anyone and if they did, they wouldn't see the playing field.
I truly believe this whole "us against the world" mentality will explode in the Saints faces. Playing mad = playing stupid. Playing stupid cause penalties and dumb things to happen. Couple that in with bad media perception, loss of a HC, assistant coach and some player suspensions and that's why you have the percentage where it is.

meh...a message board is hardly an indication of the team being overly "mad" if anything I think they are overly focused. I feel like having that mentality in the weeks where you are playing the teams that you normally wouldn't get as up for could help.
I'd also rather play mad than my coach play so scared/desperate he has to go for it inside his own 30 due to the fact that he has so little confidence in his team to win otherwise.

Well, just because they are saying "us against the world" and "we are mad" doesn't mean they won't be professionals and do stupid stuff. It may just be a rallying cry to bring the team closer or to make players shoulder more responsibility or increased focus. Hell, I don't know. But what I do know is that this mentality will not be the reason they lose games.
