Posted on 4/22/26 at 9:38 am
I wanted to review Loomis' trades to give an accurate reflection so I went back 20 years to the beginning of the Payton & Brees era and tracked all trades involving draft picks and players as best I could find.
75 total, 49wins-12loss-14washes in my opinion. So pretty good overall.
We have definitely had better success moving/swapping mid to late round picks
2026:
• P-Kai Kroeger / 2028 7th(TBD) to TEXANS for 2028 6th(TBD)
2025:
• 2026 7th(248th) to PATRIOTS for DT-Davon Godchaux
o WIN-WIN.
o Godchaux was not great in 2026, but he was a starter
• DT-Khalen Saunders to JAGUARS for OL-Luke Fortner
o WIN.
o Fortner forced into starting role due to injury & played at starter quality
• 2026 4th(108th) / 2027 7th(TBD) to BRONCOS for WR-DeVaughn Vele
o TBD.
o Came on great developing chemistry with Shough before injury
• 2028 6th(TBD) to COWBOYS for OL-Asim Richards / 2028 7th(TBD)
o WIN.
o Backup swing tackle for only swapping a 6th for a 7th
• 2027 6th(TBD) to PATRIOTS for 2028 7th(TBD) / WR-Ja’Lynn Polk
o TBD
• WR-Rashid Shaheed to SEAHAWKS for 2026 4th(132nd) & 5th(172nd)
o WIN-WIN.
o Was trending to be too high a contract for us to re-sign
• OT-Trevor Penning to CHARGERS for 2027 6th(TBD)
o WIN.
o Getting anything in return was better than cutting him
2024:
• 2024 2nd(45th) / 5th(168th) / 6th(190th) to PACKERS for 2024 2nd(41st) (CB-Kool-Aid McKinstry)
o WIN-WIN
o McKinstry played significant snaps as a rookie then starter in his 2nd year
• 2025 6th(184th) to COMMANDERS for DT-John Ridgeway / 2025 7th(248th) (TE-Moliki Matavao)
o WIN
o Ridgeway is relatively cheap and is a rotational piece
o Matavao played some snaps as a rookie, TBD
• CB-Lattimore / 5th(147th) to COMMANDERS for 2025 3rd(93rd) (S-Jonas Sanker) / 4th(131st) (CB-Quincy Riley) / 6th(184th) (RB-Devin Neal)
o WIN.
o Lattimore was injured at the time and dropped off big time after trade
o All 3 players acquired started and/or contributed playing a lot of snaps as rookies
2023:
• HC-Sean Payton / 2024 3rd(81st) to BRONCOS for 2023 1st(29th) (DT-Bryan Bresee) / 2024 2nd(45th) (later packaged in trade for McKinstry)
o WIN
o Getting a 1st for a coach not actively on your team is a win, then taking a legit starting DT with it is great. Then flipping the 2nd for a starting CB is great
• 2023 4th(115th) / 5th(165th) to BEARS for 2023 4th(103rd) (G-Nick Saldiveri)
o LOSS so far, but TBD still.
o Saldiveri appeared in line to start in 2024 camp before an injury set him back, then was hurt again in 2025 camp, and has yet to play any meaningful snaps
• 2023 7th(227th) / 2024 4th(116th) to JAGUARS for 2023 4th(127th) (QB-Jake Haener)
o LOSS.
o Taking Haener alone in the 4th was a miss, no need to give up the 7th. And almost no doubt he would have been available with the 127th pick, heck probably even the 227th
• TE-Adam Trautman / 7th(257th) to BRONCOS for 6th(195th) (WR-A.T. Perry)
o WASH.
o Trautman wasn’t in our plans, though Perry didn’t do much he flashed a little and was only a 6th, not a bad gamble
• K-Will Lutz to BRONCOS for 7th (OT-Josiah Ezirim)
o LOSS.
o Lutz is playing better than Blake Grupe & Charlie Smythe while Ezirim is still on the team he has yet to make the game day roster
2022:
• 2022 1st(16th) / 3rd(98th) / 4th(120th) to COMMANDERS for 2022 1st(11th) (WR-Chris Olave)
o LOSS
o Olave has been very good when healthy, but even then not worth all what was given up for him
• 2022 1st(18th) / 3rd(101st) / 7th(237th) / 2023 1st(10th) / 2024 2nd(50th) to EAGLES for 2022 1st(16th) (later packaged in trade for Olave) / 1st(19th) (T-Trevor Penning) / 6th(194th) (DL-Jordan Jackson)
o LOSS
o Penning never panned out
o Jackson never played any significant snaps
• CB-Chauncey Gardner-Johnson / 2025 7th(223rd) to EAGLES for 2023 5th(165th) (later packaged in trade with Bears for G-Nick Saldiveri) / 2024 6th(199th) (DT-Khristian Boyd)
o WIN.
o CGJ had played decent but not great, in contract year & was already talking trash about new contract in camp and became an issue on the practice field & locker room
o Boyd hasn’t done anything yet
2021:
• DT-Malcom Brown (saved $5M cap) to JAGUARS for 2021 7th(229th) (later traded for Ingram)
o Win.
o Brown wasn’t in our plans for that $, and Ingram played significant snaps
• 2021 3rd(98th) / 3rd(105th) to BRONCOS for 2021 3rd(76th) (CB-Paulson Adebo)
o WIN-WIN
o Adebo was an immediate contributor then starting CB for us for multiple years
• 2021 6th(218th) / 7th(229th) to COLTS for 2021 6th(206th) (OT-Landon Young)
o WIN
o Young has a been a swing tackle and key backup
• 2022 3rd(80th) / 2023 6th(188th) to TEXANS for CB-Bradley Roby
o WIN-WIN.
o Roby was a solid nickel for a few years
• 2024 7th(238th) to TEXANS for RB-Mark Ingram II
o WIN.
o Provided good snaps for only costing a future 7th
2020:
• 2020 3rd(88th) / 2021 3rd to BROWNS for 2020 3rd(74th) (LB-Zack Baun) / 7th(244th)
o LOSS.
o We misused Baun his entire time with us
• 2020 4th(130th) / 5th(169th) / 6th(203rd) / 7th(244th) to VIKINGS for 2020 3rd(105th) (TE-Adam Trautman)
o LOSS.
o Trautman contributed but not worthy of his 3rd round selection let alone the multiple picks he was traded for
• 2021 6th to TEXANS for 2020 7th (QB/TE-Tommy Stevens)
o WASH.
o Decent gamble to try and find a younger version of Taysom that didn’t pan out but didn’t really lose since it was only a 6th for a 7th swap
• LB-Kiko Alonso / Cond. 5th(172nd) to 49ers for LB-Kwon Alexander
o WIN.
o Kwon was an immediate starter & upgrade, just couldn’t stay healthy
75 total, 49wins-12loss-14washes in my opinion. So pretty good overall.
We have definitely had better success moving/swapping mid to late round picks
2026:

o LOSS

2019:
• 2019 2nd(62nd) / 6th(202nd) / 2020 2nd(56th) to DOLPHINS for 2019 2nd(48th) (C-Eric McCoy) / 4th(116th) (later packaged in trade for CGJ)
o WIN.
o McCoy is a starter & top 5 center when healthy
• 2019 4th(116th) / 5th(116th) to JETS for 2019 4th(105th) (DB-Chauncey Gardner-Johnson)
o WIN.
o CGJ was a starter for several years
• LB-Vince Biegel to BILLS for LB-Kiko Alonso
o WIN.
o Kiko was an immediate starter
2018:
• 2018 1st(27th) / 5th(147th) / 2019 1st(30th) to PACKERS for 1st(14th) (DT-Marcus Davenport)
o LOSE.
o Davenport flashed but couldn’t stay healthy or consistent
• 2019 3rd(93rd) to VIKINGS for QB-Teddy Bridgewater / 2019 6th(177th) (S-Saquan Hampton)
o WIN.
o Teddy was a great QB2 & locker room guy that made several starts
o Hampton played a little on STs
• DL-Devaroe Lawrence to BROWNS for 2019 7th(231st) (TE-Alize Mack)
o LOSS
o Lawrence was a contributor and didn’t cost too much
o Mack never amounted to anything
• 2019 4th(132nd) / 7th(238th) to GIANTS for CB-Eli Apple
o WIN.
o Apple started a few years for us
2017:
• WR-Brandin Cooks / 2027 4th(118th) to the PATRIOTS for 2017 1st (OT-Ryan Ramzyck) / 3rd (DE-Trey Hendrickson)
o WIN.
o Ramzyck was an immediate starter & became an all-pro
o Hendrickson contributed/started and played well for years
• 2017 7th(229th) / 2018 2nd(59th) to REDSKINS for 2017 3rd(67th) (RB-Alviin Kamara)
o WIN.
o Kamara was a top back in the league for years
• 2019 7th to the EAGLES for LS-Jon Dorenbros
o We got the pick back after our team doctors found medical issues on Dorenbros
• RB-Adrian Peterson to the CARDINALS for conditional 6th (DB-Kamrin Moore)
o WIN.
o Moore didn’t do much for us but at least we got something in return for Peterson after it was obvious he was not a good fit for our O
• LB-Stephone Anthony to the DOLPHINS for 5th(147th) (Packaged pick for Davenport)
o WIN.
o Getting anything in return for Anthony was a win. What we did with it after was a loss
2016:
• 2016 3rd(78th) / 4th(112th) to PATRIOTS for 2016 2nd(61st) (S-Vonn Bell)
o WIN-WIN.
o Bell was a starter for several years
• 2016 5th(152nd) / 2017 5th(154th) to REDSKINS for 4th (DT-David Onyemata)
o WIN.
o Onyemata was a starter for several years

2015:
• TE-Jimmy Graham / 2015 4th(112th) to SEAHAWKS for C-Max Unger / 1st (LB-Stephone Anthony)
o WIN.
o We couldn’t afford Graham & his play dropped after leaving NOLA
o Unger anchored our line for years.
o Spending the 1st on Anthony was a miss but still was a great value on the surface.
• WR-Kenny Stills to DOLPHINS for LB-Dannell Ellerbe / 2015 3rd(78th) (DB-P.J. Williams)
o WIN.
o Stills was a 5th that we turned into a 3rd & and a starting LB.
o Ellerbe was an immediate starter and impact player. Unfortunately he couldn’t stay too healthy. #BlessedToSeeAnotherDay
o PJ Williams being a contributor/starter for years
• 2015 6th(187th) / 2016 6th(187th) to REDSKINS for 2015 5th(167th) (CB-Damian Swann)
o WIN.
o Swann was developing nicely & making plays until a concussion shortened his career
• G-Ben Grubbs to CHIEFS for 5th (DT-Tyeler Davison)
o WIN.
o Grubbs play declined & didn’t match his salary at that point with us and completely fell off with KC.
o Davison was a solid contributor & part time starter
2014:
• Darren Sproles to EAGLES for 5th (LB-Ronald Powell)
o LOSS. But not by too much factoring contract.
o Sproles played 6 more seasons, but only 2 of those did he get close to matching production from Saints. Saints 2014 RBs were Mark Ingram, Khiry Robinson & Pierre Thomas.
o Powell played 14 games as a rookie for us mostly on STs then released the following season and bounced around the league on practice squads for a few years. He died unexpectedly in 2024, though cause of death unclear.
• 1st(27th) / 3rd(#91st) to CARDINALS for 2014 1st(20th) (WR-Brandin Cooks)
o WIN.
o Cooks was worthy of a 1st rd pick putting up 2-1,000 yard seasons. In 3 years with NO he totaled 215rec, 2,861yrd, 20tds
2013:
• RB-Chris Ivory to JETS for 2013 4th(106th) (later packaged in John Jenkins trade)
o WASH.
o Turning a UDFA into a 4th after 3 injury plagued seasons is a win itself but I graded it “wash” because his performance increased after leaving us.
? Played 3 seasons for NO totaling 5.1ypc, 1,307yrd, 8td Ivory then played 3 seasons for the Jets totaling 4.3ypc, 2,724yrd, 16td.
• 2013 4th(106th) / 4th(109th) to DOLPHINS for 2013 3rd(82nd) (DT-John Jenkins)
o WASH.
o Jenkins was an immediate contributor then after rookie season turned starter. Never made a huge impact though.
• 2014 7th(242nd) to 49ers for LB-Parys Haralson
o WIN
o Haralson was a rotational piece playing significant snaps with us for 2 seasons
2012:
• 2013 7th(220th) to SEAHAWKS for LB-Barrett Rudd
o WIN.
o Ruud played a role and contributed, for only a 7th
2011:
• 2011 2nd(56th) / 2012 1st(27th) to PATRIOTS for 1st(28th) (RB-Mark Ingram)
o WIN.
o Ingram took a while to get going but became a key piece of the offense and locker room.
• RB-Reggie Bush / 2012 6th(196th) to DOLPHINS for S-Jonathan Amaya / 2012 6th(179th) (OT-Andrew Tiller)
o WIN-WIN.
o Instead of giving Bush a larger contract we instead signed Sproles.
o Amaya played some STs but didn’t do much
o Tiller was cut before regular season
2010:
• 2010 4th(130th) / 2010 6th(201st) to CARDINALS for 2010 4th(123rd) (DT-Al Woods)
o WASH
o Woods didn’t make the Saints roster but it only cost a 6th. Tricky to grade as we cut him after camp and he bounced around the league on several practice squads for 6 years before finally being a contributor then eventual starter and having a 12 year NFL career
• 2011 4th(121st) to JAGUARS for 2010 5th(158th) (C-Matt Tennant)
o LOSS
o Tennant never played a regular season snap for us and only lasted 2 seasons. He was subsequently signed by Patriots & Eagles but was out of the league before start of 2013 season.
• T-Jammal Brown / 2011 5th(155th) to REDSKINS for 2011 3rd(72nd) (LB-Martez Wilson)
o WASH
o Brown’s play had declined some with us plus he was due for a contract extension. He played okay in 2010 & part of 2011 for Washington before a hip injury cut the season short and ultimately ended his career.
o Wilson flashed but never panned out and was cut after 2 seasons
2016:
• 2016 3rd(78th) / 4th(112th) to PATRIOTS for 2016 2nd(61st) (S-Vonn Bell)
o WIN-WIN.
o Bell was a starter for several years
• 2016 5th(152nd) / 2017 5th(154th) to REDSKINS for 4th (DT-David Onyemata)
o WIN.
o Onyemata was a starter for several years
• 2017 conditional 7th (did not convey) to DOLPHINS for DE-Chris McCain

2009:
• 2009 7th(222nd) / 2010 5th(163rd) to EAGLES for 2009 5th(164th) (P-Thomas Morstead)
o WIN
o We all gave a collective “WTF” when the pick was announced, but he was a great punter and was still in the NFL as 2025 season with 49ers.
• 2011 6th(189th) to PATRIOTS for TE-Dave Thomas
o WIN
o Thomas was a key contributor for several years
2008:
• 2008 4th(113th) to JETS for LB-Jonathan Vilma
o WIN
o Vilma was the heart & soul of our defense for years, and we never win the Super Bowl without him!
• 2008 1st(10th) / 3rd(78th) to PATRIOTS for 2008 1st(7th) (DT-Sedrick Ellis) / 5th(164th) (G-Carl Nicks)
o WIN.
o Ellis was a 5-year starter, with 2 really good years.
o Nicks was an all-pro
• 2008 5th(146th) / 7th(218th) to LIONS for 2008 5th(144th) (DT-DeMario Pressley)
o WASH. Only cost a 7th, I don’t mind the gamble there.
o Pressley never amounted to much for us
• 2009 6th(187th) to PACKERS for 2008 7th(237th) (WR-Adrian Arrington)
o WASH
o Arrington never amounted to anything, but only cost a 6th so not a bad gamble.
• 2009 2nd / 5th to GIANTS for TE-Jeremy Shockey
o WIN-WIN
o Shockey helped us win the Super Bowl and coached up Jimmy Graham
2007:
• 2007 6th(199th) to DOLPHINS for K-Olindo Mare
o WIN
• 2007 2nd(58th) to LIONS for 2007 3rd(66th) (DB-Usama Young) / 5th(145th) (DB-David Jones)
o LOSS
o Young started sparingly & contributed CB/S as well as on STs but was never worth the 2nd we gave up.
o Jones didn’t make the team
• 2007 4th(123rd) / 5th(163rd) to TEXANS for 2007 4th(107th) (RB-Antonio Pittman)
o LOSS
o But only a 5th so not a bad gamble.
2006:
• OT-Wayne Gandy to FALCONS for S-Bryan Scott
o WIN--factoring in contract only
o Gandy’s play fell off and wasn’t worth his contract.
o Scott never amounted to anything with us
• 2006 2nd(34th) to BROWNS for 2006 2nd(43rd) (S-Roman Harper) / C-Jeff Faine
o WIN
o Harper was never great, but he was an immediate starter and lasted several seasons
o Faine was an immediate starter for a few seasons
• DT-Johnathan Sullivan to PATRIOTS for Bethel Johnson
o WASH
o Neither ever played for their new teams
• WR/KR-Courtney Watson traded to BILLS for TE-Tim Euhus
o WASH
o Both were cut prior to the season
• RB-Michael Bennet to CHIEFS for 2007 4th(123rd) (Pick packaged for later trade)
o WIN
o It’s not much but getting anything for a UDFA that never played a regular season snap for us is a win.
• 2007 7th(237th) to COWBOYS for LB-Scott Shanle
o WIN
o Shanle was an immediate starter. Never great but fought off challengers for several years.
• 2006 4th(99th) to EAGLES for 2006 4th(108th) (G-Jahri Evans) / DT-Hollis Thomas
o WIN
o Evans was an immediate starter and all-pro
o Thomas was an immediate starter for 3 seasons
• WR-Deonte’ Stallworth to EAGLES for LB-Mark Simoneau / 2007 4th(125th) (T-Jermon Bushrod)
o WIN
o Stallworth was due a contract extension
o Simoneau was an immediate starter
o Bushrod became a starter
• 2009 7th(222nd) / 2010 5th(163rd) to EAGLES for 2009 5th(164th) (P-Thomas Morstead)

o LOSS
o Olave has been very good when healthy, but even then not worth all what was given up for him
Cannot agree with this at all. He was a top 16 receiver his first 2 years, and a top 8 receiver last year. The 3rd and the 4th aren't premium picks, and while it always sucks to lose picks, the guy they drafted was a great one (despite what some fans think).

2022 3rd(80th) / 2023 6th(188th) to TEXANS for CB-Bradley Roby o WIN-WIN. o Roby was a solid nickel for a few years
I disagree with this, 3rd was an overpay. Especially for how Roby played. Loomis had to overpay for them to eat salary b/c of our cap situation.

This was serious work to put this together. I like having objective facts to inform opinions. Whether a trade was a win or loss is subjective, but looking at what happened w picks is objective.

Same. When trading for picks I try to look at value first to grade, then who we selected with said picks or how we may have packaged them for another trade. Then grade it overall.
Similarly with trading for a player. If said player is an immediate starter for us then that helps the grade even if he didn't perform well since in theory as a starter he did improve us. But then also factor in how they performed to grade it overall.
For picks we traded away I just look at the value, not who the other team selected since that's irrelevant.
For players we traded away I do factor in their performance on the next team to an extent.

We have to agree to disagree then.
3rd rd & 4th may not be "premium" but you can still find legit starters and key contributors.
Saying Olave is top 16 or 8 or whatever, I get what you're saying, but that's one where I see stats as misleading. He is VERY GOOD, but he's not a clutch or true game changing WR1 in my opinion to warrant all of it IMO.

Something tells me that the Saints will buy Seattle's first pick.. What they will pay is.. I have no idea...
