Spagnuolo is going to take a few years to get it turned around. I hope he gets that long.
The guys he inherited are basically built for a completely opposite scheme than the one he runs. Gregg Williams needed his linemen to basically just block people so his blitzes could get to the QB, but Spags doesn't like to blitz as much and needs a front 4 that can generate pressure.
He doesn't have that. Nor does he have a secondary that can give his guys time in the first place.
It's also a much more complicated system, that's going to take time to implement. Much less straight up man coverages where you lock up on a guy and run with him, and many more complex zone schemes where you're responsible for an area of the field, and you have to rotate over to help this guy, or that guy.
When he gets the guys he needs it'll probably be pretty good. But it's going to be a little while.

Why would any DC worth his salt sign with the Saints? You're never going to get the toys you need, and you're always going to be a second-class citizen. Why do you think we were stuck with Williams for so long?
As a Saints fan from the early 90's, this crap is painful to watch, going back to the SF game last year. Scoring 50 a game is great but not if you're giving up 51. I'd much rather have a halfway decent offense and a STUD defense.

Stats are ridiculous. I'm just worried that this whole season might be toast after only 3 games.

Because coaches deserve more than 3 games before you cast judgment on them. We arent going to win the superbowl every year, so if it takes this guy a year or two to teach and implement his system so be it. Especially if one of those years is this one. Combine all of Goodells personal sanctions on us with the replacement refs, and new Defensive and Offensive play calling system, we were bound to have problems. Don't forget the Saints last road to the Superbowl took 44 years to travel down.
Its brutal to watch these games, but we arent getting destroyed, I think that's the hardest part to watch. The talent and drive is there, but the coaching to point it in the right direction is missing. There is no sideline presence in the games, drew sits and stews after every drive, the team just seems lost sometimes. Like the engine's runnin, but there's no body behind the wheel. Maybe we should have hired Parcells. Seems like that would have been a genius decision right about now. I think it'll be interesting to watch the team change and improve as the season goes on. And they will improve. All is not lost yet.

I like your angle. This fricking hurts though. I hate seeing a whole season thrown completely away like this. I never thought it would be THIS bad.
