These are the PFF ranks among their position groups. Just cause they are “playing” doesn’t mean they are good.
I think it’s hard to argue against the premise that the Saints have drafted poorly recently
Breese DT79
Kool Aid CB38
Alontae CB63
Riley CB73
Sanker S47

I’m not saying Loomis has done some great job. I think we drafted well last April and have some pieces moving forward. “Void of talent” is what people on here said in August when they predicted 2 wins and a mountain of blowouts.
And each of those guys has had ups and downs, that’s certainly true.

This past year’s draft is proof that sometimes even a blind squirrel can find an acorn.

This last draft was all on the coaches. Mickey et al provided scouting data but the decisions were made by the new staff.

quote:What are you talking about? Whatever her other flaws, Gayle spends money on this Saints team. All those back-loaded contracts to sign big name FA happened because she paid the cash up front in signing bonuses, etc. Raiders, Jets, and Bengals are examples of actual cheap teams. The decisions may not have worked out, but Gayle ain't cheap and is considered one of the most player friendly owners in the league.

As much disdain as I've had with him the past 5 years, this offseason has graded out to a B+.
Coaching Hire: A, Kellen Moore has them inspired despite a horrendous start, he might not be rah-rah, but the guys are buying into what he and Staley are doing.
Free Agency: B, Limited resources, but got bang for their buck for the most part.
- Justin Reid: brought a local kid home who can still contribute, solid veteran leader and has been a steady presence
- Re-signing Johnson & Young to continue as building blocks, bought lower than market and they both have produced solid #s this year
- Low Key value: Blackmon (injured first game), Bullard, Radunz, Pettis, Williams, and Rumph all contributed solid snap counts.
- Poor value: Cooks, Yiadom
Draft: B, this is what you call a building block draft.
- QB: Secured (Tyler Shough - 2nd)
- LT: Secured (Kelvin Banks - 1st)
- S: Secured (Jonas Sanker - 3rd)
Depth Value:
CB: Secured (Quincy Riley - 4th)
LB: Secured (Danny Stutsman - 4th)
TBD:
RB: Devin Neal - 6th
DT: Vernon Broughton - 3rd
In the offseason, I said if you somehow got 3 starters in this draft crop, we'd be off to a good start.

quote:This was a Payton/Allen failing, because it was said particularly that they didn't know how to fit him in the scheme, which is a great failing of the DC.
They botched the best draft pick in recent years with Zack Baun, which should be a fireable offense in itself.
This was ALWAYS Allen's issue was that he does not bend his scheme to the players, rather he tries to bend the players to his scheme, and gets rid of them if they don't fit.
This is also my biggest issue with Payton and the Ryan thing. Ryan came in and made a scheme to fit the players and we had a top 5 defense a year after having the worst defense ever, then Payton mandated running the Seattle Cover 3, which Ryan neither had familiarity with nor the players to run it. And that was Payton's excuse to bring Allen back because he was a heavy zone guy.

So, we pushed on the pre season Vegas line at the end of December and where exactly are we headed?
