Smith was making tight throws all game.

The 49ers defensive advantage is offset by the number of weapons the Saints have on offense compared to the 49ers.

so you think Alex Smith had to throw into the same coverage and defensive pressure as Brees?

what i'm saying is its neither here nor there. You have to play the game against what you are dealt. 3-0 with W and higher passer rating. 4-2 L and little bit lower passer rating. Yards are for not when you cough it up twice.

And the 49'ers are playing with high school players? They have some talent on their team also.

You can make an argument that Brees makes a lot of his weapons better than what they really are. Most of the guys on our offense are later round draft picks or never panned out until they played with Brees.

No shite. Just not going to sit here and act like a stupid arse homer. Alex Smith played mistake free football and made the crucial plays that needed to be made and won the game.

So should we trade Brees to the 49'ers for Smith?

my point is Brees was throwing into better coverage with a better pass rush and playing from behind having to take risks he didn't necessarily want to take.

Alex never had to take a single risk until the last drive and his best receiver was being single covered and our pass rush wasn't getting home

Alex played the game of his life but what Brees did against that defense was nothing short of amazing

Don't forget Smith had that rushing TD and lost a fumble.... so 4-1 to 4-2 is more accurate.

Alex was dropping balls on the dime and hitting them in exact spots the ball had to be. Save me all this crap. I'm not here to dog Drew's performance, i'm saying the difference of the interceptions and the victory is the difference of who had the better day.

Yep

He played a hell of a game

Is he better than Brees? No, that's silly. But he had a better game IMO

You do realize that Brees had a huge advantage in offensive weapons, right?

The 49ers outplayed the Saints

That's all anyone really knows for sure. All of this "postition vs. position" nonsense is just media-created bullshite.

They were never on the field against each other. There is no way to accurately figure who had the "better" game.

Had Drew Brees won the game, had zero interceptions compared to Alex's multiple int's as well as losing the game against Drew's game winning drive... there will be absolutely zero doubt on this board who had the better game. But tables are turned so panties get all tight.

he absolutely was I already said he played the best game of his career, but he had the luxury of a lead and a running game and he was going up against a more inconsistent pass rush and coverage.

Therefore Drew had to put in more work to get comparable results.

Are you really gonna tell me you don't think Alex Smith wouldn't throw an INT if he threw it 63 times at the same defense Drew faced?

Alex Smith fumbled twice and lead an inept offense for much of the game.

But I guess having a better defense and teammates there to jump on your fumbled footballs equates to playing better.

It's not that clear cut. One of Brees' interceptions was basically a punt to end the half.

Our loss had way way way fricking less to do with any "Smith vs. Brees" debate than it did "our defense vs. their offense".

The focus on position vs. position is ridiculous, media-fueled garbage.

No way Smith could have come back from 17 points down like Drew Brees did. Also without Pierre Thomas the offense became stagnant for a few drives. PT was a beast against Detroit and that first drive against SF before he was concussed by Whitner. No - Smith didn't outplay Brees. Smith made some big timely throws but in no way, shape, or form did he outplay Brees.
