Dick Butkus (RIP) was the Saints radio color commentator for weeks 1-8 in the 1976 season.

I remember laughing as a kid listening to Butkus on WGSO radio in NOLA because he would get so frustrated with some of the mistakes the Saints would make on the field!(Wayne Mack did the play by play). Can't remember why he only worked for half if that one season.

Yep. One of the few reasons to listen to the Saints that season. Wayne Mack also was the color man on the Tulane radio broadcasts; Bruce Miller did the play by play. Bruce was notorious for always using a catch phrase "Woah Nelly" followed by several seconds of dead silence. Problem was Woah nelly was used no matter what was happening - TD for your team or the other team so you never knew WTF was happening.

That’s funny, I never knew he was involved with the Saints.

I had forgotten he was a regular on My Two Dads with Paul Reiser and the BJ & The Bear guy.

Cool article. Man I grew up watching that guy. Was a absolute terror on the field. Ray Lewis type of meaness and always around the ball.

Back then the radio.....and TV guys got sloshed in the booth. I knew Mr. Hap who would tell us great stories about those old guys. He said Butkus was one of the nicest guys you would ever meet and uproariously funny.
Wayne Mack and him destroyed two cases of Budweiser during one game and had to be helped out of the booth....then they went to dinner at Ruth's Chris and consumed cocktails and steak.
