Good riddance.

Seems they told Carr the $10M or we will go after everything

Never saw this turn around on the cap. Still looking at it lol.
Did he get 20 and Saints saved 50?

It's not going to be a clean, straightforward thing because if what I heard is true they are undoing the restructure, he gets the roster bonus still, plus whatever guarantees were left from this prior to the restructure. The caveat is another $30m was going to become guaranteed in March, but that got rolled in with the restructure. This is the $30 I believe we are getting back.
So I'm still trying to untangle what was from before from what is now to figure the exact numbers, but I think someone floated something out there already which is likely correct.
Edit:
Basically between the $10m roster and $30m from base salary for a $40m combined, we decided not to fight him on the $10m roster bonus if he didn't fight us on the other $30m. We could have tried to get all $40m but it isn't a sure thing we would have won it all, thus the arbitration of splitting what he got to keep.
The $30m would have been much easier to argue and get back since that was going to be from his base salary, which he would not be playing to earn. The $10m would have been harder to get back since he was still on the roster at that point.

Contract Notes
Derek Carr signed a four year, $150 million contract with the Saints on March 6, 2023. $100 million of the contract is guaranteed, with $60 million fully guaranteed at signing. Per PFT, Carr received a $28.5 million signing bonus and his 2023 and 2024 base salaries are fully guaranteed. If on the roster in March of 2024, a $10 million roster bonus due in 2025 will become fully guaranteed. Another $30 million in salary in 2025 will be guaranteed if on the roster that March. Carr has a no trade clause as part of his contract. We are assuming that the Saints included a void year for salary cap purposes but that is not yet confirmed.
Per a report from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, New Orleans completed a contract restructure to save $23 million in 2024 cap space.
The Saints restructured Carr's contract again in 2025. Reports of the restructure indicated $30 million in savings. We are currently estimating a full restructure to save $30.996 million in cap room. We will further update the numbers once we confirm the amount.

We get added 7 maybe this year and 25 more next year is what someone posted
Posted on 5/11/25 at 1:30 pm to Chad504boy
Yeah it's weird with the undoing of the restructure and where all the dead money was going to hit, but something like that.
The extra $2ish mil is from the unguaranteed portion of his base salary that wasn't converted. We would have gotten that back regardless of how the arbitration went (thus the reported $30m back).

Seems like the saints could have gone after the 10 he got cause he never was healthy enough to earn it. Compromise of sorts but the people milking Derek being the overly nice guy are misguided. Part of this all is his unwantingness to have anything to do w saints cause he’s butthurt

Thanks.
And still stoked about all this. Best news in two years next to DA.

The $10m was actually guaranteed from last year. I just relooked at that. And he was legit on the roster and healthy in March 2024, so it would have been VERY hard to argue that. That's why I think he is getting to keep that. Even though he got that paid this year, it was technically earned last year.
I think what is lost in this was iirc $17m was the roster bonus this year, and that was rolled into the restructure, and we are getting that back, but I can't currently find the old wording on the contract before that restructure.

I am SO fricking glad DA is gone. That was such a huge albatross around the team's neck. Worst decision Mickey every made.

I don’t think you’re right. It’s been said the saints let him have it and chose not to argue it
Posted on 5/11/25 at 3:16 pm to Chad504boy
I literally said that. I said they could have tried to argue the $10m, but it was earned last year but not paid until this year (the details are in the quote I have about with the contract). It would have been a lot harder to get that back because of when it was earned.
The other $30m was earned this year, but would have likely been awarded back to the Saints anyway since he is hurt and doesn't want surgery to attempt to play (and cannot play otherwise).
Both sides seemed to be reasonable here and let the other leave with what would have likely been a true arbitration decision anyway.
Not sure what is not right about any of that. Based on the contract details and the outcome, it's pretty obvious that is what happened.

The part in question:
quote:It was earned last year, and would have been very hard for the Saints to get back because of that.
If on the roster in March of 2024, a $10 million roster bonus due in 2025 will become fully guaranteed.

Carr has the $aints over the barrel. There's no way he walks away from $30M. If you really believe then there is a tv sportscaster job in your future.
He will simply unretire two weeks before the start of the regular season. He will attempt to get released with the monies owed. Carr's retirement is a farce.

I guess since we may be out of cap hell...what is SFP going to complain about now

Says Saints will be about $12.7M over cap in 2026. If they carry over all 2025 cap space left after Carr / Ram post 1 June cuts they will be in positive cap space for 2026.
Does anybody know what that positive number is for 2026?

Based on Spotrac's estimate we should be about $9.3m in the hole to start next year next year not counting the rookies (guessing they bring it up to around that 12 in the hole), but will have between $34.3-44.3m to carry over, less about $5.5 for the rookies this year, with that extra $10m depending on if we cut Taysom post June 1st or not (already counting Ram as a lock).
So barring some big FA spending this year, we will start in the positive and still have at least $30m more we can find in restructures if we want.
