Who is that? Is that you?
Posted on 11/8/13 at 6:52 pm to Meateye
I'm flattered, but no. That's Preston J. Gary Jr. son.

OH! I don't think I've ever seen a picture of him.

You like his work?
When I get a chance to read it. He writes for the Chronicle doesn't he?

Don't read his stuff. I was just joking around. I couldn't stand looking at his dumb face anymore.

Oh well he usually writes good stuff.

A big part of the injuries IMO.
It's the sobering truth. The real problem is that there may very well be no solution.
Players' physiques are capable of creating LOTS more kinetic energy than before, but, the human brain has NOT increased its capacity to endure that energy.

quote:I knew it because I was around back then. I must have been about 15 when Atkins retired. He was an awesome pass rusher, the best the Saints have ever had from the DE position IMO. Fwiw, the Saints also retired Jim Taylor's #31 for a time, but eventually brought it back.
How many are willing to admit they didn't know his number is retired by the Saints?
On another subject, for some reason Jake Kupp is not on that roster I linked, but the starting interior of the OL that year, from left to right, was Jake Kupp, Joe Wendryhoski, and Del Williams. All three were listed at 245 pounds. Hard to believe.

The Saints tried to start a franchise with more veterans to try and win now than any other team before them. Unfortunately, with no free agency it was a doomed strategy. If there would have been free agency they might have been in the playoffs in the just a few years (like the Jags & Panthers with free agency).
Atkins wasn't the only oldster that still had some miles left...
Dave Whitsell came in at age 31 and led the NFL in INTs with 10 in 1967. 19 in his last 3 years on the Saints.
After his retirement from football he became a real estate investor. He was also a member of the National Football League Retired Players Association and the Kenner North Kiwanis Club. He was inducted into the Western Michigan Hall of Fame in 1989 and the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame in 1996. He died from cancer.

Whitsell was an excellent player. Probably more of a natural FS than a CB, but he was a baller. He made the Pr-Bowl that first year. I don't remember for sure, but he was probably our only pro bowl player that year. I know Jake Kupp made the squad one year.
ETA: Thanks for the link to Whitsell's burial place at Lake Lawn in Metarie. Both of my parents are buried there as well. I'll have to look for his vault next time I'm there.

Yeah, the weight difference has been crazy.
My dad played NT in college at Arkansas State and was only 250.

Yea its nuts. My pops took my mom to new Orleans for their honeymoon. They went to your the stadium as it just opened. There were no tours but the lady said to go walk around and if anyone stopped them then tell them you played here the night before. Dad was 6'8" and 315... hewas bigger than most of the team that did play it was neat. They got to go all over the dome.

The Big Cat Ernie Ladd was about 6'9 and 320 pounds and Buck Buchanan was 6'7 and 286. Rookie Bubba Smith was 6'7 and 295. Atkins was next.

who was the def. lineman we traded our first round pick for during the early years?
Posted on 11/10/13 at 6:20 pm to Curt
I think we got Gary Cuozzo from Baltimore and they got Bubba with the first round pick.
