I have a pre civil war map and the circle used to be called Tivoli circle.
I guess the statue was built to appease people who want to maintain Confederate values.
Also strange thing about Lee was he personally didn't like Slavery.
he freed his wife's slaves.
I wouldn't change it, but I am not against building a statue for Benson or having a Saints park.

benson? really benson? the only reason the team is hear is because your boy pauly T. and its not like benson broke the bank in pursuit of a championship. Benson is notoriously cheap. he happen upon a really good general manager and a great coach(that took a 250,000 dollar pay cut to sign a great DC)

What the frick is this new love fest with Benson? How soon we forget.

Owned team through it's best 25 years. Is a NOLA native and probably has less than ten years to live.
I remember how he acted at tiger stadium, and vowed not to return.
But had he never bought the team we would have lost them 20 years ago.

Therefore you want a statue of him? He made a profit off buying the team as well you know...and then tried to move it right after the storm.
The guy doesn't deserve a statue, plain and simple. It's absurd to even propose IMO. Tagliabue deserves one far more than Benson...

Alexandro.....your a retard. yea..lets just go around and start changing and eliminating all "memorials" and "statues" that are old and out-dated..or in your case one you dont agree with?----leave Lee Circle well enough alone...

I think they should rename the stretch of I-10 that passes in front of the Superdome "Drew Brees Pass," similar to the way St. Louis renamed a stretch of freeway after Mark McGwire.

It amazes me how ignorant our society is regarding its own history. So many people do not understand the true history of our nation.
The city of New Orleans basically laid down for the Union Forces for the entirety of the Civil War.
RE Lee didn't have much to do with the city, if at all.

General Lee was one of the greatest Generals that this nation has ever had. He was respected by his adversaries and even President Lincoln. He did more with less in the War of Northern Aggression than any modern military leader I can think of.
Yeah but what does that have to do with New Orleans? He was a great general for a losing side. Why don't we build a huge arse statue to Czar Alexander over on Esplanade for the same rationale?

Lee fought for the wrong side - both historically and morally. You can rationalize it all you want (he was born in the South, he didn't personally like slavery, etc. etc. etc.) but facts are facts.
And for everybody who made fun of me for admitting that I don't know much about Lee - I'm waiting to hear what he achieved for New Orleans. Or if he EVER personally set foot in our city.
I DO know a shite-ton about American history - but I'm just not a Civil War buff. Please enlighten me all you wise people. WHAT DID LEE DO FOR NEW ORLEANS TO DESERVE A CIRCLE AND STATUE?

I'm trying to find a link... but I beleive that He designed a revolutionary (for the time) building foundation using cotton bales in either the Customs House or the St. Charles Hotel.
I'm still digging.

Old New Orleans myth. No cotton bales holding up the Custom House.

Brees isn't white supremacist enough to have that circle named after him.

You know, about 5 or 6 people have said that but then not responded to my money question:
WHAT DID ROBERT E. LEE EVER DO FOR NEW ORLEANS TO DESERVE A CIRCLE AND STATUE IN HIS HONOR?
DID HE EVER EVEN SET FOOT IN NEW ORLEANS?
Please answer the questions before you question my intelligence. K thanks.
