I was 10 or 11 when that Steelers/Oilers game happened. Watched it live. My grandad was a Saints fan but also a Bum Phillips fan and Steelers hater. I thought he was going to put his foot through his old RCA.

You don't have to tell us where you're from but I thought you said at times on this board that you grew up in Baton Rouge, LA.

Is your family from Pittsburgh? I was wondering whether you could share with us the reason why a man born and raised in Baton Rouge would decide to be a Pittsburgh Steeler fan.

Is it because of the 1970s and all of those Steeler Superbowl rings and because the Saints were terrible in the 1970s?

I don't blame you or anybody for doing that, if that's true. Additionally, I would not blame any La. person for switching off the Saints and pulling for the Steelers or Cowboys or Pats because it is now clear to me that the NFL will take decisive action whenever the Saints threaten to make it to another Superbowl. So, if ya wanna pull for a team that plays in the Superbowl, don't be a Saints fan.

I am from Baton Rouge, born in the early sixties. And the Saints were (as everyone is aware) horrible in the beginning. My uncle was a sports betting fanatic (not a good one I might add) who told me about this kid from Louisiana who played for the Steelers and had me watch their games with him on Sundays. I was hooked. Have been a Steelers fan ever since.

I actually gave some thought to becoming Saints fan after they won the Super Bowl but just could not do it. Seems to me to be disrespectful to those who have stuck with them through thick and thin. But damn, what a screw job this past Sunday.

I respect your decision to be a Baton Rouge kid who is a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. The NFL would NEVER screw over the Steelers like they can do to the Saints.

In fact, if a fan would like to root for a team that has lots of SB wins and will get more SB wins, they should not be a New Orleans Saints fan.

The NFL would like to see the Saints return to the Lovable Losers and, strangely enough, the NFL's own actions have caused me to reach this conclusion.

I myself am from NOLA. When I was a kid, I pulled for the Alabama Crimson Tide because they are such a good team. They still are but, I'm more loyal to LSU now.

We are bandwagon fans, you and I. When you are from one town with a home team and you pull for an out of town winning team, they call you a bandwagon fan.

I don't blame you. The NFL slapped that one year suspension on Payton and took away those two 2nd round picks from the Saints faster than you could say "No more Superbowls for you."

I don't blame you at all for not being a Saints fan and for cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Can you imagine the NFL keeping the Steelers from a SB berth because the Ref says he didn't see an infraction like that because it was a "bang bang play" ??

The NFL would never do that to the Rooney family.

Stick with the Steelers. The Saints are never going to get 6 SB rings. They'll move to another city before that happens.

We may be considered traitors, but not bandwagon fans. Bandwagon fans change teams based on their winning streak. I have been with the Steelers since the 72 season. Through thick and thin. Bubby Brister to Neil O’Donnell. Hence why I would not change to the Saints when they won.

But I would agree, the Rooney’s are NFL blue bloods. They would not get treated as shabbily as they treated Mrs Benson and the Saints fans. It is pathetic what happened. The Rams and their fans should hang their heads in collective shame but they are celebrating what happened and openly acknowledge it. Might as well become professional wrestling now.

Traitors? No. The name is Bandwagon fan. The Steelers have never stopped winning so there's never been a reason for anyone to quit on the Steelers. They have enjoyed a relatively weak division over the decades. The Bengals and the Browns are traditionally rather weak.

As far as the Saints ever becoming as successful as the Steelers, I'd say: it will never happen, stick with the Steelers.

Baw, Urban Dictionary - Bandwagon Fan.

We have a good thing going in Pittsburgh, but we went through some dark times in the 80s and 90s. Nothing like what the Saints have faced though.

Didn't Coach Cowher win a SB with the Steelers for the 1996 season? If you win a SB during a decade, I'm not sure you can say that the decade was "dark times."

The Steelers have had 7 losing seasons and Six Superbowl wins since the 1972 season. That's a great record of success over the course of your lifetime. I would not agree that the Steelers have experienced "dark times" at all since 1972 when you've got 6 Lombardi trophies and only 7 losing seasons.

The Steelers are a marquee franchise owned by a marquee owner. They have always been a GREAT representative for the NFL and I personally think very highly of them.

I don't know how they do it, but, man, the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise really has figured it out. They always seem to get the right guys to be HC and run the organization. So, don't take any of my comments the wrong way -- I love the way that the Steelers do business.

PS I'm not sure that we can take the Urban Dictionary as definitive but, if you'd like to, I respect that.

Two come to mind. Passing on Dan Marino in 1983 (holy crap, what a stupid decision). And our unwillingness to send Coach Noll on his way as he began to decline.

We hung onto a lot of players much too long, particularly from the 70s into the 80s. But Coach Noll brought us the stability the franchise needed. Keep in mind, the Steelers had not won a playoff game until the Immaculate Reception.

But the Rooney's have been a good family. Was disappointed they did not do more to discipline Roethlisberger though.

I'm not familiar with most of the "insider Steeler issues" that Steeler fans are, so, I can't really discuss these with you. I wasn't aware that Coach Noll ever went into decline! But, of course, I know that he was replaced at some point in the past.

It is a pretty drama free organization (even when they were losing). But they were loyal to a fault to "Chas" Noll. It was clear he was being dominated in the early 80s and they hung onto him regardless. It got so bad in 91 that they could not ignore it any more. We finally had a resurgence under Coach Cowher.
