Nnamdi's situation is similar in that aspect.

So we can say that, in the most general sense of being "risky", the situations are comparable.

K. How about team needs vs. other needs? Current salary cap situation? Age, apart from the risk issue. How much service do you get from the guy. I just think people are latching onto the big name and going "fanboy" on us to an extent.

Yeah, us fans are excited about getting a big name player that could help our team win games.

Hopefully enough to win a Super Bowl

I think those nine words pretty much sum it up.

well our defense last year was crap. Not many people will be trying to look at things the way you are. I see where you are going with this though. I'd like to have him. I wouldn't be overjoyed or anything but a little more satisfied? Yeah, I would be.

I know I had higher hopes for our D last year than a lot of others and was severely let down. I think a lot of people want to get excited about the 2013 season but maybe are just a little more pessimistic than before. And I totally get that.

I wouldn't mind having the guy for the right price, but he's getting like crazy love on this board. Beyond his value.

Please forgive us for getting excited about our team and potential free agents.

its just really hard to know what to expect for the guy. I mean the whole thing about how the zone scheme didn't fit him well in Philly is somewhat overrated to me.

at some point, the player just has to make plays. You know? Just be a fricking professional.

there was a time in 2011 (late in the season) when the Eagles started to play a lot better on defense but I think that had more to do with all the QB sacks they were getting.

I do think Nnamdi would be eager to bounce back though. And for a guy who is turning 32 in a few months, I'm sure the Saints wouldn't throw some huge deal at him either. Not that the money is there to do it anyway.

In general I stay optimistic cuz of parity in the NFL. Every year you see some teams going from one end of the spectrum. Sometimes it is on one side of the ball like Houston going from 29th in D 2010 to 4th in 2011. Sometimes it is overall turnaround ala Indy: 2-14 in 2011, 11-5 in 2012. I would go so far as to say if you gave me a turnaround of 10 or less individual plays from the Saints disappointing 2012 they would have been in the playoffs. THAT is how tight parity is.

We're an established NFL juggernaut offense since '06. All it will take is getting just close to average defense and I start expecting a first round bye. Fapation urge comes when you imagine a defense that could approach being good.

Whether the D takes that step or not we dunno. It doesn't take much imagination, or perhaps just the laws of probability, to think significant improvement is to come. Just bouncing back to where the defense was in 2011 would equate to a 20th ranked D.

I give Payton a lot of credit for the 3-4 change and willingness to go with yet another DC. When you are good at what you do, you can readily identify when someone else is doing the same thing at a high level. Spags is a good guy but his scheme ended up a bad fit. I had serious questioning of several of the personnel decisions I thought had to be laid on him. Here's to Rob Ryan DC extraordinaire! 4th time is a charm!

oh yeah, I'm with you. After what happened last year, you can only go up. But I remember thinking about the same way during the off season last year. There would have been no way you could convince me that we would stoop to a new low like that. I'm looking forward to this year but I'm not going to have the sunshine pumping enthusiasm like before though, sorry.

a lot goes into it though. Our defense actually ranked 12th in takeaways last year. For all their faults in other areas, this was pretty good. I think they scored 4 touchdowns on their own as well.

yards given up and turnover differential don't always tell the whole story. Look at Pittsburgh, they gave up the fewest yards last year but didn't make the playoffs. The Bears collected the most turnovers for a defense but were also sitting at home come playoff time.
