Brees too competitive to help develop a young QB?

Love the guy, but he doesn't strike me as the type that's gonna go the extra mile for the guy set to take his spot. His focus and drive to play is insane, which is why he makes an amazing QB, but potentially bad Training mentor. I mean look at Grayson...how did that idiot fail to show an iota of progress or promise after 2 yrs with Brees.!?

95% of what makes Brees a HOF QB is his film study and preparation. Everything I have heard about him and his relationship with Chase is that they are on the same page with that. So no, if the Saints grab a young QB I am sure he will take him under his wing.

It's not Brees job to mentor his replacement. It is his job to lead the team and if someone behind him can learn from his work ethic and leadership great.

Brady the same way as was Favre. I actually have no problem with that.

If you read his book and his comments over the years this is not correct.
He won't kick them out of the nest but he has made clear its not his job to make someone better able to fly and take his job.
He learned this from the pro QB's.

My thoughts are since Brees has been here we drafted a 3rd and 7th round QB and that's it. We've invested almost no capital (the third was a decent investment but the 7th was a flyer) in bringing someone in to actually take his place.
This was the first year we heavily considered taking a first round QB. If you aren't taking a first or early second round QB you aren't really looking for a replacement.
VERY few QBs after the second round ever do anything in the league.

Very few qbs do shite in the league period. That's why I really don't care about drafting a QB before Brees leaves. Everyone wants to bring up Rodgers favre but that's like the only time ever it worked. Most qbs come into the league and start very early in their career and show what they are made of. Virtually none sit as a backup for a few years and then start and play well.

It's more about making sure you have a legit replacement before letting Brees go than it is about grooming a QB.
The more darts we start throwing at QB (legit darts too) the better shot we have at that.
We don't want to be the Browns drafting one every year while not having one.

I say worry about a QB later and keep building the team around Brees for the next 3 years. Sign a free agent in a few years and try to fill our trophy case in the meantime.

I kind of like this approach. Our Defense is only going to get better and more mature. Id love to see us go all out on Defense next draft, a stellar ILB and edge rusher would make our D scary good. I say just let Ireland do his thing

I literally watched a Feb '17 Dan Patrick/Brees interview yesterday and it was revealed that Brees sees a lot of various NFL QB's during the off-season at the same training facility in San Diego.
Patrick asked Brees if they share info (QB secrets/play design/beating defenses etc...) and Brees said despite personal friendships, he only discusses general ideas or training techniques.
Brees said most vets keep football secrets close to the vest to maintain a competitive advantage.
Now I know that was said in reference to colleagues, not teammates, but me thinks this competition junkie holds back some secrets from the backups du jour.

I read the Brees book after super bowl. He was taught by Doug Flutie the concept “never let your backup see the field for a single play” because of the risk of losing your job.
So I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t seem eager to help his replacement.
