This all makes sense to me. If next year they can do a full resign/extension, then there's no reason to restructure this year. A restructure would add years at an inflated cost when they could get a better deal overall if they wait.

Pretty much, and you keep your options open longer.
If they don't need the cap this year then it's better all around to wait.

These are such different scenarios:
Brady was asked to help the team by holding off a portion of the cap payment until a later year; in return he received more of his contract guaranteed. No cap savings just helped the Kraft’s checking account.
Manning did not go to the organization and tell him he would return, and play for $4M less. When he agreed to return the team asked if he would take a cut to help their cap situation. And even then, he did not agree until they assured him they would use the funds to shore up the O-line. So, before agreeing to it he wanted some assurance that by taking the cut it would benefit him.
Brees has not been approached by the organization (according to SP), so why would he voluntarily agree to restructure, extend, or take a pay cut if the team has not asked him to.

Quick question. 20 yrs from now will we remember Drew for winning championships, or how much money he made? Do we know how much money Montana made? Elway? frick no. We remember rings.

The saints should bring him to the table with an extension.

An extension next year is going to happen. The organization can make a few key conversions on player contracts to get under the cap and not touch Brees.
As all contracts stand currently roughly 40 million in dead money falls away in 2016. That will allow the Saints to cut ties/negotiate with current players.
Brees get a huge pay day this season and will extend in 2016 and take some pressure off the cap.
Loomis has been very sharp and for all the doom and gloom when Drew first signed his contract it is starting to look good moving forward.

I agre, but I also don't think it is completely off of the table for this year. If there is a situation, player(s), that the team really wants to go after and they need to make a move to free up a few million; I can see them calling Brees in a pinch to make something happen. But, as many have pointed out, they would ideally prefer to wait until next season as an extension would be more favorable to the team then.

I get that.
But with cap space rollovers, i think it should happen this season so that we can sign some damn good free agents

I'm no cap or contract guru, but we had Drew on a discount for his first contract as a Saint. I don't think he made huge money in SD. So he is currently in his first and last monster contract. I'd be shocked if he took a pay cut. Especially if you compare his contract to Flacco, M Ryan, Romo, etc.

Technically speaking if we redid the deal this year and didn't touch what we saved(or only part of it) we could carry it over. So it really doesn't matter from that perspective if we did it this year or next.
What does happen next year is we have more leverage (threatening a very unlikely cut or dangling more guaranteed money next year). If we redid him this year any signing bonus would also be on this year's cap and without an extension it wouldn't be cost effective.
But next year it has to be an extension as a simple restructure is not possible.
Now there is also the fact that Brees is getting older and, while still playing at a very high level, has been on a slight downward slope. If we extend him this year we are locked into him good or bad for the next 3-4 years. Waiting a year gives us roster flexibility as far as what we can do at the position.
And following that we could very well just let him play the deal out and figure it out in 2017.
So it's not really about saving more this year as we have options that could save the same regardless. It's more about gaining leverage and keeping options open.
But you are right in that the Saints are the ones deciding to wait. And that could also put the fear of injury and no further payday in Brees' head. That is very good leverage to have. It's why players hate the franchise tag.
Exactly. The organization wants flexibility in the future more than they want cap room now. One thing I have learned about free agency the Saints (Loomis) always comes up with the money. They might not spend it wisely, but they always find the money.

My opinion pure and simple, everybody else is taking pay cuts to help their teams and stay with their teams so Drew Brees ought to take a paycut also to help the Saints!!!!!

P Manning and the Broncos front office are in win now mode. Brees has 4 kids who he wants to grow up and remain rich. Take off the black and gold glasses these are life decisions brees is making. InB4 he has enough money already
People who love to tell others what to do with their money, especially things they'd never do themselves.

We have no proof that Sean or Mickey asked him if he would take a pay cut. And the fact is if we reconstruct his contract that would only increase his salary next year and IMO I do not want to extend him as I cant wait until his contract is done and the only contract he gets will be the jaguars for half of what he makes now.
But the sad thing is we will probably re sign him and continue to go .500 or worse
