Media hates losing "value" but anyone that has ever run anything knows need outweighs value 100% of the time. Saints needed cheap starters, you get those in the first round. Saints have good depth, you get that with the picks they traded away. It makes perfect sense for what the Saints need.
The saints needed cheap starters but gave up some early picks that could become cheap starters
They gave up entirely too much value. I get that they have a great defense and don't want to waste it.
Imo it's a balancing act. Yes, you go after a guy you want but they put themselves in this wide receiver hole.
The saints never trade back and get extra capital.

Since 2016, the Saints have the 3rd best overall record in the NFL. These clowns whine and criticize, but the results say that Loomis knows what he's doing.
Yeah mostly from hitting on that 2017 draft. Obviously they made other great moves but it's not possible without the 2017 draft.
You draft well, you get cheap labor. I'm fine with going to get a guy.
To the people that say the 2and or 3rd rounders wouldn't even make the roster I laugh.
Are you telling me you wouldn't like to have an extra 2nd, 3rd, or 4th rounder next yr? You can always use cheap labor.
There is a reason Loomis is attaching dummy years to each and every contract.

This exec claimed “Howie Roseman is great at it”. That immediately invalidates his entire opinion. Howie roseman is trash. Dude has drafted terribly.
Yeah, I get that you can question what the Saints did, but using Roseman as an example to prove the point - I agree invalidates the argument.

We took 2 first rounders, so that cancels put 18 and the first rounder next year.
That leaves the 2nd, 2 very late 3rds (comp pick territory so basically barely better than a 4th), a 4th, and a 7th(?). Of those the only one with high value is the 2nd. The rest are just chips to either move around or take a chance on someone that may or may not develop.
Most drafts only have good talent through the middle of the 3rd. Yes you can hit on picks after that but the odds drop dramatically.
How many drafts have we had where we had to cut the later picks after a year or two, or even before the season started, just because they weren't good enough to crack the depth we had.
So looking at this trade with all the facts and not just looking at X number of picks vs. 2 picks, we have to decide if Olave and Penning were worth 2 firsts (the picks we used to take them, not extra firsts) and a 2nd.
We won't know that any time soon (unless they come out the gate playing extremely well). So all this blabbering anyone is doing about it is just mindless speculation.

We gave up 1 extra pick that was likely to become a starter. Picks that are past the mid 3rd (and even sometimes late 2nd depending on the depth of talent in any given draft) are FAR from guaranteed starters.
Many guys in that area of the draft (the comp 3rds we gave up that were basically barely better than 4ths) become role players at best. That's not to say you can't hit later on, but the odds drop tremendously.
So we maybe give up some future depth with 2-3 of those picks, but likely not starters.
So then we have to look at if Olave and Penning are high end starters that were worth giving up another mid-low end starter for (the potential of the 2nd rounder), and maybe a couple of role players.

As a young owner or GM, i get it, we probably gave up a little more than we should have. But this team is built to be a playoff team now and the franchise made a decision to go all in.
Worse case both players become solid starting vets for years......
