Anyone else interested in Chase Claypool WR Notre Dame?
Posted on 4/19/20 at 9:24 pm
Posted on 4/19/20 at 9:24 pm
6’4
238lbs
4.42
40 in Vertical
19 reps on bench
66 receptions 1,037 yards (15.7 per) and 13 touchdowns in his senior year.
Claypool doesn't have shake to get much separation underneath, but he's physical inside the route and is adept at making contested catches when needed. He has size/strength/speed to bedevil singled up cornerbacks on 50/50 deep balls. He's a vertical challenger outside, a possession receiver as a big slot, an outstanding run blocker and immediate coverage ace on special teams. His elite traits and diverse skill set could allow him to create a unique footprint as a pro.
Strengths
Physical specimen with size and length to overwhelm
Strong competitive nature
Big and forceful against handsy coverage
Build-up speed can overtake unsuspecting coverage
Presents a sizable target with an expansive catch radius
Works back to the ball on all three levels
Contested catch specialist outside the numbers
Uses size to create late catch space
Elevates beyond cornerback's reach at high point
Pancake maker with nasty demeanor as run blocker
Premium special teams cover talent
What a damn freak. He’s an excellent blocker and great on special teams. Sounds like a Sean Payton pick. I want him!

He was my sleeper guy before the combine. I thought he could be a target in the 3rd if he ran sub 4.6. He blew past that.

4.42 is crazy for that size.
STeamer helps as well.

I like him or Duvurnay out of Texas.

Yes. Him and Michael Pittman are my favorite receivers that don't have 1st round grades.

From the games I saw him he wasn't a route runner, it was more bodying DBs up.

I rather Colin Johnson from Texas but Claypool would be good.

Would be a miracle if he’s there in the third

I wanted to start a super homer troll thread about him a few months ago when all the “draft every LSU player” threads were popping up, then he had a crazy combine, and it looked like he could be a legit second rounder (first probably any other year). He’s basically a lesser version of MT13.
I think he could be a stud, but I thought that about St. Brown a few years ago and he’s been lost on a crappy WR Corp in Green Bay. He’s for sure a better physical specimen.
I think he will be a stud, and would love him in NOLA, but not sure how he fits the offense at this tone.

... what is the catch?
From what I’ve read and heard about him.
Most people wanted him to move to tight end before he ran that 40 time. He’s a physical freak for sure, but not a natural receiver. He’s from Canada and was a basketball player. He’s good at contested jump balls and finding the gap in zone coverage and at his size can be physical with smaller CBs.
The knock on him is that he can’t separate in man-to-man coverage and he’s slow in and out of breaks and kind of stiff. Lacks ‘wiggle’ after the catch. Is a long strider with straight line speed but is slow out of breaks. He’s not a natural pass catcher and sometimes doesn’t get his hands up quickly enough, although some of that is a product of his QB.
Kinda reminds me of a bigger Matt Jones from ArKansas. May depend on what team takes him and if he can continue to develop.

These big combine freaks always worry me bc they get hyped up at the combine. Could be a beast but they are often hit or miss. I think the offense they go to may make a difference though. I like the fact that he is a willing blocker. Shows he is unselfish and a hard worker. A lot of receivers take these plays off.

Collin Johnson SUCKS. Absolutely sucks

I don't think he will make it out of the 2nd round to fall into the Saints lap.

He is a legit WR. He put up solid numbers on a mediocre offense last year, with stubborn arse BK calling the plays.
Last year was his first year as the #1 WR. In 2016 he was way down the depth chart as a freshman, 2017 he was the third WR behind guys like St. Brown and Miles Boykin, and 2018 he was 2nd behind Boykin. As the #1 guy he caught 28% of the completions and caught 13 TD's.
He is less of a combine workout warrior, and more of a sleeper with potential that had a great workout.

I agree with this. Pittman reminds me of someone.....
Another reason why i wouldn't mind trading back, grabbing an extra 3 and using those 2 3's on From and one of these guys.

Since you probably watched him more than most:
1) Did he have a lot of drops? I read a few places that he dropped some easy (wide open) passes. Also read ND’s QB has no touch.
2) Should he move to TE or is he strictly a WR? I know he doesn’t want to move to TE, but I’ve read that’s a better fit for him.

I don't know the exact stats, but if we needed a crucial completion I wanted him to have the ball thrown to him. I trusted his hands. Some games like against Michigan in a huge rain storm BK called 40+ passes, so I imagine he had a couple that game.

I actually like Ian Book a lot, but he tends to make some panic decisions and makes some bad throws. This is a discussion for next year at this time, as he will be an interesting QB going into the draft.

I can't see him getting in a 3 pt stance and blocking, but he can for sure block better than a Jimmy Graham type TE. I think it depends on how you want to use him. I could see CSP using him in a way that he draws a LB or safety and creates a mismatch in a way that Jared Cook can't based on his speed and jumping ability. He couldn't be a Josh Hill type TE though.

He will be gone in the top of the 2nd
