What this thread is NOT: an argument that Dennis Allen is a GOOD NFL HC.
What this thread is also NOT: and argument that Dennis Allen is not a BAD NFL HC.

We simply have not seen an environment that controls for the necessary variables to allow us to know whether he is good or not.

To be a good, modern NFL HC i feel like you should
1) Win games (this is obvious)
2) be elite on one side of the ball

Here’s the rub….#1 is pretty much reliant on how good your QB is

DA has had:
-Carson Palmer in his last season in Oakland. Palmer has had like 2 good seasons in his entire career. This season for Palmer would be Derek Carr’s worst season of his career outside of his rookie season, for context.
-Terrell Pryor, a literal wide receiver
-The first 4 games of Derek Carr’s career.
-Jameis Winston/Andy Dalton

Look, maybe the great, QB whisperer, Kyle Shanahan would have won 10 games with that line up but man, thats a big yikes.

The biggest knock you can put on his HC resume is that his defenses were bad in Oakland, but im not exactly sure how that relates to now, as his Saints’ defenses have gotten BETTER since he became HC in NO.

Outside of “hey you lose games” which, look i get it, its an auto-argument winner to people who dont want real context, you dont hear any of the hallmarks of “bad coach”. His team respects him, vets respect him, the culture seems good.

2023 is really the first time where he has a QB good enough, on a roster solid enough, to analyze his HC abilities.

And for those that say, in his 3.5 seasons of HC experience so far, that a good coach would have won more games, maybe you are right, but what specifically would they have done better? Because frick, Sean went 7-9 3 times in a row with Drew Brees. And McVay just lost 12 games with a SB winning team. And on the other side, the Bengals are top contender with Zac Taylor…..

Yeah this year he has the tools player wise, schedule wise and weak division wise to win more than he loses.
I think most of us thought his biggest mistake last year was Pete C. His other major mistake was how he handled the Def. as a head coach. Completely whiffed last year on stressing TO's and the way to get them.

He has addressed both so far and with a better year with injuries leaves no room for failure

His teams have been undisciplined, sloppy and lacked attention to detail

It’s do or die this season with the roster and staff turnover. He’s got “his guys” in place and a team that should win the division on paper

I feel safe saying this will be his first winning season, but man, there are bad game day decisions and there are awful game day decisions and we made all of them last year, especially the 2nd Tampa game. I hope he learned his lesson.

Last few years with and without DA as head coach we've been critically snake bit with injuries. I get no excuses, but when you lose so many star players every year before or early in the season it's going to be hard to win, especially with bad QB play.

If Ingram gets a yard we are 8-9 and win the division. DA also beat a playoff TB team with Tom Brady with Taysom as his QB and no WRs. Total record is 8-10 which if not for Mark Ingram would be .500 with a playoff appearance, division crown and who knows what would’ve happened once there. We lost to inferior teams in the playoffs in Brees’ last 4 seasons, so it’s not out of the question that we could’ve won a game or even two once there

Another point I thought of is if you could have a head coach with a natural ability to generate performance out of a single position, regardless of talent/resource investment
#1 would obviously be QB. But #2 would very likely be outside 1-on-1 press CB.

And there isnt a coach in the league with ability to locate low-cost, diamond in the rough talent that fits that mold more than DA. He’s a freak at it.

He can plug dudes in and get them to perform at such a high-level. Latt is the best CB this franchise has ever seen. He missed half the season and DA’s pass defense didnt suffer. Look at the camp battles. He has FILLED that room with players it’s going to hurt to cut. Troy Pride out there balling.

I think they are doing a good job of assembling a good competitive roster, Derek Carr can ball and his wheels are underrated so I’m excited to see what he brings with a chip and a fresh new start

This is the year DA either delivers, or has to get fired, IMO. He’s got a good roster with a good QB. Carr isn’t great, but you can definitely win with him. Looks like the D line has successfully reloaded, and D should be potentially even better than last year. Division is weak. There are no excuses.
