Ok, coach him up and all but you could have done that in the 6th or 7th round.

Players always go when they should right? They thought some team would take him probably. Maybe other teams were waiting and now they have to change plans late.

He's a big athletic guy who certainly has the tools, Josh Sweat just got picked and they both have excellent measurables with not a ton of production. It doesn't take a great scout to turn on FSU film from last year and see a bunch of NFL looking players that were horrifically coached. Too early for Rick IMO but he after some competent coaching he could also make them look like geniuses in a couple of years.

Despite starring at Middletown High School in Maryland, where the four-star recruit was the state's Defensive Player of the Year, Leonard decided to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandmother to matriculate to Florida State. He played four games as a reserve defensive end in 2014, and then shared the team's Most Outstanding Defensive Player in spring 2015 practices. His production on defense was not excessive the following fall, however, as he had just five tackles (2.5 for loss) in 13 games. Coaches asked him to move to the offensive line the following spring, and he wound up starting six games at right tackle in 2016 (the first three and final three). Leonard was the team's starting right tackle for all 13 games of the 2017 season.
Leonard is a top-heavy tackle with decent athleticism but lacking in consistency and fundamentals at this stage of his development. There is enough athleticism and potential to work with, but he is still a project with a lack of body control and balance that creates challenges in landing anywhere but a practice squad early in his career.

They saw something they liked to not risk leaving him on the board. Not saying it's right or wrong but it only takes one other team liking a player to mess up your plans.
The media can say all they want, but no one but the teams know where they have these guys graded. The Saints had him graded at least late 4th.
Maybe that's right, maybe it's not. You can only let it play out now.

FSU lineman Rick Leonard a surprise pick of the New Orleans Saints
No one saw Leonard going this early.
Rick Leonard’s draft prospects were always going to be settled on day three— we all just figured we’d know his future closer to dinner than lunch. But the draft does nothing if not keep you on your toes, as the New Orleans Saints just reminded us of that by selecting Florida State offensive lineman Rick Leonard in the fourth round of the draft with the 127th overall pick.
Leonard (6’7, 311) began his Seminole career as a defensive end before making the move to offensive tackle. What he lacks in experience, Leonard makes up for with his pro-ready frame, which proved enough for the Saints to draft him a few picks before the freakish Josh Sweat came off the board, courtesy of the Philadelphia Eagles. Leonard will join a pair of former ’Nole cornerbacks on the New Orleans roster: Patrick Robinson and P.J. Williams.

Most people really have no clue how bad some of Jimbo’s assistants were. I compare the Fisher/Trickett relationship to Payton and Joe Vitt. Absolutely no development or cohesion in their position unit for years.
We need OL depth, may have been too early for Leonard but we’ll see what happens with real coaching and time.

Hmm. I thought another place said he played Lacrosse in high school (of course he could have played both, but they didn't even mention football in the other article).
Still, that's only 2 years playing OT, with only a year and a half of starts. Not much time at that spot.

Lol obviously the HAVE tape on him. The point is they didn’t have it ready because this dude wasn’t anywhere on anyone’s radar in round 4.

That’s why I was bolding it.
I’d love to see the talking heads breakdown of mid to late round offensive tackle talent.

If everyone paid attention to the media, Hillary Clinton would be the president.

It’s funny that most of the negativity is basically coming from people just not happy that the names they actually recognize on the board aren’t the ones we are taking.

That’s always the case. Also based on where guys went to school
If Davenport went to Texas A&M and Smith Florida, different story

They showed some tape on him on nfl network right after the pick was made and Mayock talked about him a bit.
If you're watching espn you are watching a bunch of idiots who know little to nothing about football.

Rick Leonard obviously means Saints are in win now mode
Posted on 4/28/18 at 1:30 pm to windshieldman
But he swore up and down taking a 3rd round WR as opposed to a QB meant we were in win now mode. Now this move says the opposite.
Maybe, just maybe, the draft is for now AND the future?

I was being sarcastic. There’s been like 1,000 “these picks are win now” and “going all in mode.”

I didn't mean you. A certain chris poster swore up and down taking a WR in the third over a QB meant we were CLEARLY in win now mode.
You're good people.
