I don't recall having the opportunity to draft Mahomes at 11 since KC traded up to one spot ahead of us to take him.

You're right, though. What a draft class.

The only "miss" would be Muhammad in the 6th, but it's a miss because Indy scooped him off waivers before we could sneak him on our PS.

He's still producing in the league for 4 years, which is about what you want from a 6th rounder.

Payton said we were set to take him, until KC moved up

They assumed the Bills would take Lattimore, which would've put Mahomes #1 on their board.

Wasn’t deshaun Watson available at 11?

While we didn't have a superbowl for it, we don't get Lattimore and his elite rookie play... Brees is probably a viking instead of cousins

I agree. We are not a SB-level team in 2018 without him.

Get it right, its at least 2 1sts, 2 2nds, and 2 starters

Lets say we hit on drafting 100%. You're looking at giving up:

Marshon Lattimore (1st)
Ryan Ramczyk (1st)
Marcus Williams (2nd)
Alvin Kamara (future 2nd; took in 3rd)
Trey Hendrickson (young defensive starter)
Alex Anzalone (young defensive starter)

For Deshaun Watson

We most likely are not. However, our future at the QB position is clearer with Watson at 11. The only question is, how does that affect the rest of the draft.

My gut says Ram would still be drafted in the first & AK in the 3rd (because he was targeted) But, since we missed on Latt do they go after a Griffin instead on Anzalone or Hendrickson? Or maybe a Sidney Jones or Teez Tabor instead of Marcus Williams? Reach and overspend for a FA CB, force the team to resign Apple after they traded for him in '18?

Still would have been a good draft; but the trickle effect could be dangerous.

This is a cop out and I’m not sure why Payton doesn’t get more heat over it. This regime ALWAYS goes up and gets their guy—they are super aggressive. You’re telling me that Payton thought Mahomes was “the best he’d ever seen coming out of college” at what is by far the most important position in the sport, and he just decided to cross his fingers and hope he’d fall to 11?

I get Brees had a couple years left, but if he honestly evaluated PM as highly as he did, then I don’t think he should run around talking about it like he has been. He fricked up. Obviously it was still one of the greatest drafts of all-time. But he still fricked up.

While we have jumped from the late 20s into the teens, traded back up, etc.

the way it was laid out, buffalo was 'supposed' to take lattimore (they needed a cornerback). Remember, he was supposed to be this top 5-7 pick

7: chargers still had rivers
8: panthers shouldn't be trading in division
9: bengals still had dalton

Well, we didn’t win the 2018 Super Bowl with him. Didn’t even make it to it. But Patrick Mahomes was the NFL MVP in 2018, has been to the 2 Super Bowls since, and is going for a repeat in 2 days.

I love Sean. Not even mad at him for not picking Mahomes. But I am a little pissed for not picking him if he did, in fact, evaluate him that highly. All fans want to “win the draft” the day after. (I know that’s not what this thread is about, I’m just using it to comment.) Which really is just based on the value a bunch of Mel Kipers convince us of. They got a guy ranked #7 on their big board and we get him at 22–SCORE! What value!

We really like a guy at a position of need ranked #22 on somebody’s big board and we take him at 7? frick you, Sean, you stupid frick! You could have traded down to the 20s, picked up a 2nd rounder this year or a 1st next year, and still got the player. Terrible value!!! But what you—we—don’t take into account is that actual teams’ big boards don’t give a shite about Kiper’s or Bucky Brooks’ rankings—they have their own. So if we love somebody—like Mahomes—chances are another team may too, so you don’t play that “win the draft” game where winners are awarded the morning after. You go get your guy.

Where was I incorrect? We literally couldn't draft him at 11 since he was drafted at 10.

Where did I say anything about moving up or not moving up? I simply stated that at 11, Mahomes was not available. That's it. I agree we should have moved up for him. That's not what I'm talking about though.

OP says we missed out on drafting him, which is precisely what happened by the scenario you stated. We missed out on drafting him, and you missed on your sarcastic response.

I wasn't being sarcastic about anything in this entire thread, but ok.

When OP says "missed out on Mahomes" it implies (to me) that we had a chance to draft him and we took someone else.
