I have criticized Willie all season on several coaching issues but there is one thing he is great at- leading these guys and winning despite the adversity. Its a testament to who he is and the culture he has put in this team. The hope is BI returns for the playoffs and in the meantime when everyone discounts us(all media will say we’ll fall into play-in)- Willie and Zion will carry this team. In other words- this is Willie’s “You gotta fight- Part 2” and I think the character of this team will respond moving forward. Adversity creates a great team and truly believe Willie will get these guys playing above their heads.

Good luck with that. We need a Coach not a motivational speaker.

Part of your job as a coach is to motivate your team especially during adverse situations. Thats needed more than anything right now.

You know what makes a player want to play for a coach? When they see competency. No matter how positive and motivational Willie is, if the players believe that he doesn’t know what he is doing, they won’t respond. You have to be both a good coach and motivator.

Look I get it. I’ve been on Willie’s arse most of this season- weird rotations, lack of in game adjustments and overusing/underutilizing certain guys. That being said Willie has motivated this team before, they’re not tuning him out and hes winning as well. So personally I think he has this teams ear and respect. Does he need to get better in other areas? Yes. But just this past week he benched CJ in clutch and called out Jose on the court in his hometown. Those are huge things Willie wouldn’t have done before.

What about our performances in Willie's time here in New Orleans leads you to believe the players don't view him as competent and someone they want to play hard for? I don't think effort has ever been in question, in fact I think the Pels generally play hard compared to the league as a whole.

Great post. This team has played with above average effort 67 of 70 games. That’s a feather in Coach Green’s hat.

What coach out there do you think could have this team playing better than they are right now?

I'm so confused. Where does this thinking even come from with regards to this team? Where is the indication coming from that the players don't think Willie is competent? The only stats that pop up this year are "best record since (insert some year 5-13 years ago)" or "most games over .500 since (insert some year 5-13 years ago)". This is the best team we've had in a long time and like it/admit it or not, Willie has played a positive part in that.

Just posters taking their opinion of Willie and projecting it onto the players

There's way, way, way more evidence that the players have a high opinion of Willie than the inverse

I agree on that. Regardless of how we think Willie is as a coach, he has the full respect and attention of that locker room.

True, there is zero indication that the players don’t want to play for Willie at this point, quite the opposite if anything. I am jumping the gun.

It’s more that I am cautious to give Willie praise for the positive culture he’s created and his motivational abilities (you gotta fight, all that). If the personality stuff is all you have as coach, it eventually wears out. Players know when a coach is doing the right things with the X’s and O’s and when you start losing playoff series and poor game-planning and in-game coaching is to blame, all the ra ra stuff goes out the window, especially to the players.

I am very critical of his ability to ever be a good coach beyond personnel stuff, but to be fair he’s a young coach and it’s hard to complain about that when you are 15 games above .500. I do feel confident in his ability to get the guys going through the adversity of the BI injury, which was the point of this thread lol.

Seriously? Don’t have an exact number, but quite a few. He has done a good job this year, but we have a very very good roster. There are several coaches who could have this team in the 2-4 seed.

Well, they seem to have seen competency so far this season.

Yes, I'm serious. I'm not talking about head coaches of other teams, I'm talking about possible replacements. We don't live in a world where we get to take Eric Spoelstra from the Heat. What coach out there that's available would do better than Willie?
