Why officiating Zion is so hard

Article from Sports Illustrated asking a former NBA ref and current officiating consultant what makes Zion so hard to officiate.

TL;DR Zion attacks so hard and fast officials aren't always able to get in proper position to see the fouls.

quote:

It’s different with Williamson, who doesn’t plant his flag on the block like O’Neal did. Instead, often moonlighting as a point guard, he’ll either drive the ball from the perimeter or catch a pass 15 feet out and then rumble in from there. By the time he reaches the basket, more than one defender will in all likelihood have had a chance to slow him down, complicating what officials have to deal with before a point of contact is made.

That uncanny combination of size and speed impacts the anticipatory decisions officials normally make. The three basic elements of refereeing are location adjustment, position adjustment and vision adjustment. There’s a lead official (somewhere along the baseline, ideally on the strong side), a slot official (free throw extended, near the sideline), and a trailer. Possessions involving Zion tweak their individual responsibilities a bit and force all three to focus on spots they otherwise don’t.

“When [the Pelicans] swing it back to the weak side, and Zion puts it down going to the basket, the lead doesn't have a chance to get there,” Vaden says. “And the slot is basically trying to referee that play by himself—with help, but there's a lot more pressure on [them] that way.”

In these spots, the lead official often has no choice but to observe from the opposite side of the lane, which isn’t preferable. Even still, referees don’t stare at Williamson so much as they focus on different defenders who appear on his path to the rim.

...“When he dunks the ball, you or I can reach out and hit him as hard as we want to, he's not even gonna feel it. He's going to be able to finish with power. And from a referee standpoint, they're trying to get their eyes to the point of contact, but he goes through it so powerful that you can't tell if he's hit or not,” Vaden says. “Most of the time, you're not gonna see it until you go to replay or go to the film session later and look at it in slow motion to see if there is actually contact or not.”

Stan needs to go on a rant and get fined before the season is over, make sure that Zion getting proper foul calls is one of the points of emphasis official train on in the offseason.

frick it

my favorite thing about Zion is every shot, he immediately goes up for a rebound, whether it goes in or not... If he's flopping around trying to sell fouls like the other stars in the league, he won't be in position to do that

Zion is a freak athlete from a size and strength standpoint who doesn't flop, embellish contact, and rarely complains to the refs. It's just going to be a thing with him.

I’ve watched refs assume fouls on Harden defenders for ten years. Now you’re telling me that because they’re not in optimum position to see a foul, they’re just going to assume there was none?

I love the fact that Zion doesn’t scream bloody murder or flail everywhere like he’s been shot anytime he gets contact. It’s a breath of fresh air. It’s also sad that he’s penalized for it.

I think that’s such a cop out. Is it really that hard to see when they hack him every time he touches the paint?
It’s not hard they just don’t want to call a foul every possession.

That’s what I was about to post. Everything they are saying about Zion is supposedly the excuses used by Harden defenders who why he draws so many “fouls” (aka “hard to officiate”)

Excuses don’t hold up to me

Gayle needs to have a fine fund for SVG and just let him go off a few times on egregious calls.

That’s bullshite when he’s getting hacked mid dunk and missing and they call it a block.

EXACTLY!!!!

there are certain things that defenders do that is generally called a foul no matter what. LIke what Jokic did to him at the end of the game. When you swing your arm like that, 95% of the time it's a foul. When you jump straight up, but bring your arms down even the slightest bit, it's a foul. when you slap down on the ball carrier and you hear the contact, it's a foul.

Now this all depends on who's got the ball, and who's doing the "fouling", and that's what irritates me the most about nba basketball. You shouldn't have to earn the respect of getting calls. A foul is a foul, regardless of names of the players involved.

I could not be an NBA coach. When no foul was called on Jokic to effectively cost us the game, I would have completely lost my shite. That even looked like a foul. I think Joker thought he fouled Zion. I hope this organization will not tolerate Zion getting fouled on almost every possession without raising a stink. Zion deserves the Harden treatment.

To me that defense really falls kinda flat when on the opposite side you constantly hear about guys like Harden, Gobert or Lowry that get the “benefit of the doubt” when driving, blocking, or taking a charge respectively.

I mean if they know most of the time contact is made, why shouldn’t he simply be receiving the same benefit based on what is clearly a known reputation at this point?

Once again sort of just comes off like excuses for disproportionate standards.

He's reffed like Shaq

Coz he's more powerful than 99% of players, refs subconsciously factor that in. That's why a full campaign is needed to bring it to the forefront of their minds

That would be fine if he were using his size to bully people around in the post -- like Shaq.. But Zion gets the bulk of his points with his amazing ability to AVOID the clog of defenders in the paint and change trajectory in mid-air to get to the rim...

Honestly, lebron had that issue early on too. Ridiculous jump Shooters in this era can get more free throws than a bully who lives in the paint.
