re: Why are we so upset about the end of the AD era?

I'm sorry but NO WAY is AD the best player in franchise history. He might have the best numbers but anyone who watched all of CP3s tenure and all of ADs will know that CP3 was the superior player if the goal is to win games. He was as elite at his position and actually led other guys, made the better and had an alpha mentality.
I agree, CP3 single-handily willed some otherwise bottom feeder teams to the playoffs on multiple occasions.
AD has the most raw talent and highest ceiling, but he hasn't shown he can carry a franchise like CP3 could.

CP3 took one of the worst rosters I have ever seen to 36 wins And had them in the playoff convo up until the last month
His biggest downfall was that he was probably too good that year. Instead of getting an Aldridge or Roy or even a Rudy Gay next to him, he got Hilton Freaking Armstrong

Most big men cannot carry a franchise anymore.
It's been a ball handlers league for years now. That's not a knock on AD

When you say great player A is better than Great player B, you aren't "knocking" anyone

It's funny - teams are actually starting to agree with the Demos model more, it seems like. Dallas isn't tanking to keep their pick, they are trying to be good with Luka immediately, putting vets around him.
True, threes no foolproof model, if there was every franchise would be following it(except for the Knicks probably) and these discussions would be redundant.
How you build is going to depend on any number of variables, and its success or failure isn't always an indication that the overarching strategy is a failure, it just might have been poorly executed. Though I do think over the last decade we have sort of established some pretty solid guidelines for how the broad rebuilding process provides the greatest probability of success, especially in smaller markets, and it does rely more on the draft than Demps ever gave it.
I think in the case of the Pelicans though, it is a mix of poor execution and somewhat incompatible strategy. All affected by a larger mandate from above(that to be fair Demps seemed to echo) that pressured an immediacy in results that was probably never realistic.
There is certainly(and tbf still a window open for success currently) a counter-factual argument that had a few bad decisions along the route been reversed, a few bad breaks not happened, we would be talking about the glowing success of the Demps strategy. Though I will always contend that regardless it is more risky than it is often presented compared to other strategies.

CP3 - Drew Brees
AD- Andrew Luck

What is going to be upsetting is when AD leaves as a free agent instead of a blockbuster trade

I think that scenario seems pretty unlikely.
IMO I think you will know by the end of summer whether AD is gone or not by whether he signs the Supermax. If it sits unsigned you have to move him. And there will certainly be a number of buyers that think they can pull a OKC or Toronto and convince him to stay after his final season under contract.

Some people take it that way.
The reality is depth is beyond important on this league. Ontop of that, you also need a competent ball handler, and a competent wing defender.
Look at Houston, they lost a wing and depth and they're struggling.
A single top 3 big won't do it all alone. People say we'll giannis is doing Xyz. Giannis also has a competent pg (Bledsoe), sg (brogdon), sf (Middleton), and center (Lopez). Not including 3 competent bench players.
Pelicans on the other hand? Lack a wing and after Randle the drop off is substantial on the bench.

I think moving is the deep rooted fear. If you look for replacement cities you get back to former pro basketball cities. There's not much unexplored territory. that could save the pels for now.
New Orleans was a retread
Vegas
Seattle
Louisville
Nashville
Kansas City
St.Louis
Vancouver
Among a few others have been linked over the past 2 decades.
People wanting a rebuild now are crazy. This is the most important season in the history of the franchise.

I'd have cp3 at number two. And he had a legitimate argument for two league mvps. I know he was great, but he was never my favorite, and I'm maybe naive about it but I think he will stay here long enough to make it a no brainer choice.
I rooted hard for Paul when he was here, but he and his banana boat gang bff's annoy me so as a person I don't care for him that much any more. So that probably plays a fact, it shouldn't, but it probably does.

Not really a good comparison imo

Of all the asinine football comps this board seems love, this might be the stupidest.
Chris Paul is the phoniest person in the league.
Drew Brees is a legitimate good guy.
Andrew Luck missed an entire season of football.
AD plays about 65 games a year.
Chris Paul also sat a lot in NOLA.

A brilliantly talented player...more physically gifted, but ultimately flawed as well.
