What is SVG scheme?
Slow the pace?
I'd like to see a balance attack and play more defense

re: What is SVG scheme?
I assume he’s a guy that changes his schemes based off his rosters but makes defense a priority still

re: What is SVG scheme?
Ran some 4 out stuff with Dwight in Orlando, basically just surrounding him with 4 good shooters.

re: What is SVG scheme?
I stole a Reddit post from 6 years ago:

quote:

He does not have a definitive system, but he does adhere to principles.

Offense: Before They Were Cool

Stan Van Gundy was "threes and short-range twos" before it was the cool thing to do. Here is a quote from him at the 2013 MIT SSAC

There were some things that we were doing that I think the analytics supported... We didn't want to shoot mid-range jump shots. I remember being in Miami and all the TV analysts- I won't mention them by name. They would be killing us because we didn't have guys with a mid-range game, and I remember saying “Thank God.”

His offensive preferences were even more observable at Orlando, with Orlando ranking 1st in 3P and 3PA for all but one season under SVG.

SVG also likes to run a fluid offense. That's a vague term, but you can expect more off-ball screens, in-out passing, and little use of iso-plays. He likes to avoid a sticky offense.

Defense: Defense, Defense, Defense

SVG is very adamant about running a disciplined defense. Take that as you will, but part of the reason why JJ Redick got little playing time early on was because SVG wanted to drill defensive rotation assignments into JJ especially so since he is undersized as a shooting guard.

Now SVG gives nothing but praises (to this day) on JJ Redick's defense, and I don't think it's a coincidence that he is a vital piece in Doc's rotation.

Player Development: You will play when you are ready.

Another thing about Stan Van Gundy is he does not adhere to the belief that players develop through more playing time.

“There is this idea that the way you develop players is you take these young guys on teams and you just put them out there and let them play a lot of minutes. I'm not sure that works. I think what works is... You have players understanding “these are the things you need to do if you want to play. If you won't do them, you won't play.” That's a big part of player development.

If you are curious about his track record, he has worked with Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem for their rookie and sophomore seasons as well as a third off-season. At Orlando, he's worked with Marcin Gortat, JJ Redick, Ryan Anderson, Dwight Howard, and Jameer Nelson for a good number seasons early in their respective careers. That's a good track record for the skill some of these players possess, and it flies in the face of the criticisms he sometimes got for not giving the younger guys minutes.

On a side note, Rick Carlisle got a lot of flack for that too at Detroit. Not sure about Indiana.

Listen to the Zach Lowe podcast with SVG that Fun Bunch started a thread about and links to. Zach and SVG give a pretty good break down of the Pels and most of the players on the roster.
