What does this board thinks of Cousins defensively?

He is very skilled offensively, but for a player that's highly regarded around the league he surely doesn't give the same effort defensively as he does on the offensive side of the ball. We give Asik grief, but he did give good effort on the defensive side of the ball. Every time I see Cousins play defense, he's always the last man down the court and gives a lazy arse effort when having to guard anyone. Hopefully, playing along side AD will rub off on come the start of next season.

Stats and eye test tell me he's an average defender whose rebounding makes him a slight plus defender.

Cousins has the 3rd best DRtg on the team. I think he can give you a lot of what Asik gave you on defense with more blocks, steals and the ability to lead the break off the rebound/turnover. So far the DRtg for the AD/DC 2 man lineup is 97.5. Compare that to 100.5 for AD/Asik in the Monty playoff year which has always been regarded as a 2 man lineup that worked defensively at least, although the numbers under Gentry have been bad.

Some stats you are talking about from a Big are below.
His per game production looks like it is fine, but his per 48 minutes averages show his conditioning woes, and lack of effectiveness. Also that Blocks per Foul, is into the guards range. We are talking about the league leader in fouls.
He makes me appreciate AD more every game.
Demarcus Cousins:
Rebounds Per Game: 11.0 (8th)
Rebounds Per 48 Minutes: 15.4 (25th)
Defensive Rebounds Per Game: 8.9 (6th)
Offensive Rebounds Per Game: 2.1 (16th) ... yes I know Gentry's play style ignores this.
Blocks Per Game: 1.31 (17th)
Blocks Per 48 minutes: 1.84 (38th)
Blocks Per Foul: 0.34 (55th)

Cousins is average defensively. Part lazy, part tired, part technique. You can get away with with AD on the court.
He's a very good plus player and in the recent games I've seen refs be fair with him which helps.

with the caveat that sample size is still very small and these are late season games,
those Cousins/Davis numbers are much more impressive. this is a year where league offense is up across the board. certainly having Holiday and replacing Gordon/Anderson mp w/ Moore, Hill+Cunningham helps. but i was always more concerned about the defensive pairing instead of the offensive one....wasnt sure Cousins could be the lone rim protector as Davis would be out guarding 4s. i have been pleasantly surprised
Cousins isn't going to challenge at the rim like a Gobert, but he is a very large and agile (for his size) man. he can be a smart defender when he is locked in and he has been locked in more than not. that is more than enough

Asik's injuries and age (loss of quickness) killed his effectiveness. after the way the defense has played all year, i would think Gentry/Erman deserve at least a bit of a pass in terms of knowing what they are doing on that end

His rim protection numbers (when he gets there) are actually decent. He's 14th in DIFF% and 15th in DFG% at the rim among centers, since joining the Pels.

I "thinks" he's above average if he stays in shape.

Average defender. Lazy, out of shape, doesn't care
