Small Market teams are about taking risks and Oden is a big one, but if he is healthy we all of the sudden are a home-court playoff contender, if he doesn't, we still have young pieces in place to where we can absorb that misfire. We have roughly over $6 million to spend plus the MLE and a lot of the centers out there for what we can afford are very underwhelming (which is understandable, a good center commands 8 figures), so why not try for a high risk, high reward guy.

Obviously, all the reports say he is talking with contenders (Spurs, Heat, etc.), but I'm not sure how much they are offering him, but it can't be that much. With the cap space we have and the fact that Monty was with Portland when Oden was drafted, why not?

I get what you mean and pending a thorough physical I wouldn't mind the risk.

We might be a good fit for him too. He wouldn't have to play too many minutes, but would get enough to get back into it and show if his knees have any durability. Maybe a 2 year contract with the second year being a team option.

We'd still have to have a backup C in case he gets hurt in practice and misses the entire season.

One of the reason why I would feel comfortable about going after Oden is that even if he bombs out, I think Withey/Smith could handle the 5 with AD playing it in crunch time and Ryno at the 4.

Withey will be a good defensive center.

We aren't usually one of the teams mentioned in connection with Oden and we should have more info on his situation than other teams because of Monty's connections in Portland. I get why people want the team to at least take a look, but my guess is that us not being brought up in connection with Oden says they've looked and decided there was nothing to see.

We were in the mix when it was rumored that he was thinking about coming back in January, before he ultimately decided to hold off until the end of the season, so I'm not sure if that means anything.

Offer him a $4-5M dollar contract with a team option 2nd (and maybe 3rd). That would likely be the most he will get from any team, and it's pretty safe to say that any contract he gets will have a team option 2nd year on it.

He's definitely not going to the Heat.

And I don't know if I would want him with the Pels.

I like that idea. He's a cheap short term risk. It's worth it if Demps can get him.

I mean why not?

You bring him in with little expectation as someone who can give 10-20 minutes a game and add front court depth.

If healthy (and trust me, I realize how big that "if" is), he is at least the third most talented 5 that is available behind Howard and Bynum.

Its not the worst idea in the world. But I'd rather keep Jason Smith as the back up center and try to get a starting caliber 5. Oden isn't that and hasn't played a game in over two years. I wouldn't hate it, but I'd rather that be "Plan F"
