I mean whatever we’re doing now is not really working so I don’t see the harm trying something this early in the season

I think the harm I worry about is you are inevitably the fallback team after Melo flamed out on two expecting contenders and you will have him in the ear of AD, possibly as a bitter/disgruntled but still respected NBA veteran.
And honestly the one thing Melo was possibly going to be good at that carried him through his twilight was being a catch and shoot guy, taking on that Olympic role and humbling himself, and he is currently shooting 31% in that role on the Rockets. While still not playing defense, and don't we have Miller for that role? Arguably doing it better?

Kevin O'Connor didn't present it simply as pure speculation, he presented it as what he had heard as some of the interested teams as a guest on The Ringer podcast.
Rarely do we see leaks to beat writers or others from inside the Pels, so I have no problem taking it with a grain of salt, but to say what the Pels are up to one way or another is just as absurd. For instance when it initially broke about teams looking to trade for Butler, we weren't ever really in the conversation, turns out we got pretty deep into it with them even though we never seemed to crop up much in the press as a central trading partner.
