We’ll actually play defense now.

Another real tread
Take a look at the amount of "retreads" versus first time HCs (especially ones that were not hired by the team they came up with) in the playoffs over the past several years. Lots more retreads on that list.
Its not necessarily a bad thing to hire a retread. It just depends on the coach and the situation.
Gentry is a bad hire as a retread. Given the right talent, SVG is not.

Am I jumping through a wall in excitement? No. But I don't hate this hire either. I think it could work.

didn't he coach one of your 8 favorite teams?

Not ready to sprint through a brick wall, but I don’t hate it. I’m just glad it’s not Kidd or Lue

I feel a lot better about this hire than when we hired Gentry.
I mean....everyone should, its not even a comparison.
There were maybe 2 posters actually excited about Gentry.
This seems like a good hire. Both Griff and most posters here agree the biggest coaching need this team has is accountability/buy in/giving a shite or whatever you want to call it. All indications are that's one of the top strengths of SVG.

Weaver would be my #1 as Lead Assistant and prep him to take over in a few years.

SVG is a good coach, just not a good GM which were not asking him to be here. We have the roster established, let’s get it developed and go out there and fricking win

As a head coach, there isn’t a lot of things you can complain about his ability or body of work.

THere's some legit criticism of his time as Coach in Detroit (not his time as GM which was abysmal, but coach): he didn't adapt well enough at times, he played outdated defenses often, and he refused to develop young players.
But he is a good coach and has said he spent the better part of two years talking to everyone in the league about what he can do better as a HC and where the league is trending.

He'd probably have a title if Pat Riley hadn't been craving more HC glory

SVG is a better HC than Gentry could ever dream of being.
That's not really saying much though. Gentry is at the bottom of the pecking order. I'm cautiously optimistic here. Hope it works out.

True, but when SVG has had the talent, he has been in the post-season pretty consistently. He only had a couple of deep runs, but I'd be happy just getting to the postseason in consecutive years at this point
