It should come as little surprise that Emeka Okafor, after starting Monday night in Detroit, has earned a second 10-day contract with New Orleams, league sources say

The offensive boards alone have been the only thing close to a Boogie presence.

happy for him
he's played well and given needed minutes at 5
how are we looking now with the tax?
300+ away?

They have enough to fill the empty roster spot and Okafor's roster spot with minimums which would be about $500k each for the remainder of the season. The extra cushion they got with the Dante dump is about $300k over adding 2 minimum guys, but that's only useful to younger player. The subsidized vet minimum for someone like Jarrett Jack would actually be more than an $800k lump sum using the injury exception.

This is off a little bit because a few games have been played since then, but I calculated the 10+ year vet like Okafor getting a prorated amount of $823k for 29 games but it costs the Pels around $520k because the years of service increases are subsidized by the league. Teams only pay the 2 year vet amount.

So can we do it? Dude has way more game and athleticism left in him than I would have ever imagined.

Crazy that he basically didn't play for 4 seasons

Do what? Sign Okafor? Yes. The Pels can basically do 3 things.
Sign 2 old guys to vet minimums and have about $300k in tax room.
Sign 1 old guy to the minimum and 1 young guy to about $200-$300k above his minimum
Sign 1 old guy to about $500k above his minimum. So if they'd rather have Frye over Okafor + GLeague guard.
I suppose they also could just sign Okafor and have $800k in tax room.

Would really like to see at least 1 younger guy with a 2 year deal (non-guaranteed 2nd year). We have some cheap depth in Miller and Liggins (if we choose to) for next season. The older vet minimum route with TA and Nelson is okay to provide a vet presence, but there is a reason those guys take minimum 1 year deals. Locking up a younger bench piece who has potential to really outplay his minimum deal would be great.

They really should allow for injury exceptions to be granted until the trade deadline. It’s BS that we don’t get any room at all to sign some help. I know we have done this to our selves with some of the contracts given out. But come on

We have an unused DPE from Anjica already. We have a tax/hardcap issue.
Posted on 2/13/18 at 2:56 pm to NOFOX
DPE is gone because of tax.
FYI in Vaughn trade Pels used one of their trade exceptions while creating another one.
Not a big thing but small tool to use in future.

I have pg help. Josh Gray former tiger has looked good as a sun. Just signed another 10 day contract and Booker due back soon. The traded for Payton will leave them signing him to question. We need to go get him. I want my cousin as a pelican!

This blows my mind. Guys just typically don't come back from being away from the league that long.

i just realized i'm only 2 years younger than Emeka :/

Will Guillory has a new article out on his comeback this morning. Most guys his age would have said screw rehab, just retired and gotten fat and happy. Okafor was focused and determined.
quote:
"From the moment I got injured, my mindset was that I wanted to get back," Okafor said. "I didn't anticipate it taking as long as it did, but my mindset was that I want to get back, I want to play the game again."
..."It was essentially a four-year process," Okafor said. "I just took my time making sure, not only the initial injury (was healed), but to recondition and rehab everything. ... (I) figured while I'm waiting for my disc to heal, I can take the time to heal other things. When I come back, (I can) feel nice and bouncy and rejuvenated."
