The New Orleans Advocate, the New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans formally announced a partnership Wednesday that links the city’s only seven-day-a-week newspaper with its two professional sports teams.

John and Dathel Georges, the paper’s owners, joined Saints owners Tom and Gayle Benson and Rita Benson LeBlanc, along with roughly 400 guests, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome to formally kick off the partnership. The deal makes The New Orleans Advocate the official newspaper of the Saints and Pelicans, and it allows the newspaper to promote itself at home games of the two teams.

...“We have a great newspaper here, a daily newspaper, instead of having one three days a week or whatever it is,” Tom Benson said in relation to The Times-Picayune’s decision to curtail home delivery. “We are excited about it. We think The Advocate is going to do real good for itself and us too. We think it is very important. My wife and I every morning sit down and read the paper. There is nothing like it.”

It will be interesting to see if there is improved coverage of the team with more professional competition. I know the team itself has stepped up their coverage with the Black and Blue report and official Pelicans blogger Jim Eichenhofer has been putting out a lot of good content lately considering how light the news is right now.

Not for several years. Name changes aren't worth the trouble around here.

Like this a lot. This town needs a better class of professional NBA writers. Hopefully this move pushes TP/Advocate to make it happen

You people think this has anything to do woth reporting?

The advocate paid sponsorship dollars. No different than mcdonalds or people's health.

Absolutely nothing to do with who they think is better

What makes you think we people think that? My hope that this will improve coverage is about fostering competition.

I wouldn't be surprised if the terrible Bounty Gate coverage by certain TP reporters played a role in this decision, but Benson said it all, they went with the paper that's still printing 7 days a week. It's not just about sponsorship dollars, it's also about exposure.

As I suggested on another board, your screen name is the most ironic on the site.

I'm not sure of the point you're trying to make, but daily print coverage is a very big deal. You rah-tawded or what?

Well sir... daily print coverage is pretty worthless. Your getting most of your instant news on the web this very second aren't you??

And the point is being the "official" paper is only because they paid for it.

Mobile posting on a message board ... grammar nazis only come out when they have nothing to add to the conversation.

So VOR... your telling me people are more likely to get news from a physical newspaper than an internet news source?

I'm saying the following . . .

Nola.com is perhaps the worst news website ever constructed.

There is substantial value to a daily print paper . . . in terms of distribution, status, quality of writing and general perception. But that's not the issue. The issue is T.P. vs. Advocate and their relation to the Pelicans. Grown ups (including young people with a brain) still value print media.

1) nola.vom is horrid indeed

2) the "relationship" you speak of is one paying the other $$$ so it can say it is the official paper. Will have zero effect on the writing staff or quality of reporting.

Do you understand sports marketing and sponsorship deals?

COX pays a lot of money to lsu for its deal... does it make it better than dish or uverse?

Same reason we have pepsi now in arena... its not because the pelicans prefer it. Or the fans for that matter. You pay someone or an organization enough, they will say what you ask them.

And please, tell me again why instantly outdated print information is better? The business environment I am in has left them behind. They are fine for rigid info like a team lineup or something. But media has moved on. Classifieds are on the internet. Weather is real time on the net. Stocks, breaking news, sports transactions, etc.

But you are always right

You think the Advocate is going to spend the $$$ to be the official sponsor and then roll out shitty coverage of the team?

Its to sell more papers and generate more traffic... which sells ads based on unique impressions and number of subscribers
