The only way I think he gets the boot if we are epically bad by all star. Chemistry issues don't appear to be a problem but they haven't lost a couple in a row yet so it will be all guesswork on how they react. I think we make the playoffs so this is a moot point

I think he has gotten a lot of leeway because he has not had the players. He does now. Man do I hate LA and New York teams in every sport

This roster was constructed to win NOW. If we are in contention for a playoff spot within the last week or so, I think he'll be fine. But I'm telling ya, if they start off slow, I don't think he'll make the break.

George Karl is out there as well if we stumble. He would be a great coach if you hate the second round of the playoffs

Goes from coach of the year to coach looking for a job.
I think he may enjoy his Cush analyst job with ESPN. A lil less stress.

The only way Monty gets fired is if the Pelicans start out 0-20, or are way out of contention at the All Star Break. As long as the Pelicans have a shot of making the playoffs, his job is safe. And, if they miss out at the end of the year, it's not the end of the world.

Let me translate that for you.
George Karl is out there. Great coach if you want to lose in the first round of the playoffs

That actually happens a lot in the NBA.
Between Monty's contract and his status around the league, I think the only way he gets fired is if he loses the team and they just don't play hard for him.
Fact 1: The Experts are near unanimous in their appraisal of the team "interesting but not quite playoff worthy" Whether this team misses the playoffs by a little or a lot, as long as they are hustling I think people will say "The ESPN was right, Demps needs to make some trades".
Fact 2: Rebounding is a huge weakness. If this team doesn't force turnovers, shoot well, and get to the line EVERY game, they are going to lose. If Stiemsma doesn't improve and Jason Smith or AD goes down, they are probably going to lose.
Fact 3: The primary criticism of Monty in his time here by a WIDE margin are his rotations. Based on the roster I'd say the likely minutes controversies will come from Stiemsma and Rivers getting too many minutes, but Jason Smith will get his 20 minutes and Rivers isn't getting time over Holiday/Gordon/Evans, so we're talking about choosing those 2 over Morrow/Roberts and Withey. Monty is not getting fired because he went against the fans on who's at the end of the bench.
Again, the team quitting on Monty is the only way I see him getting fired, but if they don't quit and AD/Smith stay healthy, they should be in the thick of the playoff race. It's just unfathomable that the team is healthy and focused and near the bottom of the conference when teams like Phoenix will be tanking and Sacramento will be Sacramento. The Lakers might even start tanking if they get off to a slow start and Kobe's not ready.

All of this.
If Benson wasnt happy, he could have let Monty play out his contract, declined his option, and brought in his guy for the new era. One of the first moves of his ownership was extending Monty- 2 months before Demps got his extension.
Monty aint untouchable or a genius, but he is safe this season barring utter catastrophe

I think it's either sink or swim. No middle ground.
This team will either take a huge stride and Monty will be recognized as one of the up and coming coaches in the league.
Or they will underachieve and he will be let go.

Monty:
* got Demps his job.
* fits the culture.
* is well liked by the star players.
* is well respected by his peers.
* has 3 years on his contract after this (although I don't know how cheap or how team optiony those years are).
What do you think is making it sink or swim time? Because Benson is on death's door? I tend to agree that if he doesn't show something this year then he probably doesn't have it, I'm just trying to see why the team would go that direction.

The window to win doesn't last long.
You have a core of young players locked up for a few years for a lot of money. It won't take long to see if they "have it".
Of course, everyone will be clamoring "you have to give him more time! At least a year!!". The same thing has been said about him for like 3 years. Before long he will have been the Pels coach for 10 years and people will be saying, "one more year!".
We made a move for the players. That won't be the issue to blame anymore. Now it's if the coach can make them work.

Right. A coach who gets into the playoffs and loses to the likes of the Lakers, Thunder, and Spurs every year really struggles in the playoffs.
And who do you think played and developed Ty Lawson? Faried? Nene? JR Smith?
