Brian Sutterer Zion Injury Risk Breakdown

Been watching this guys sports medicine-oriented breakdowns of injuries and sports-related medical phenomena lately. He seems to be extremely objective and has a wealth of knowledge on various subjects.

He breaks down oddities in Zion’s gait, his play style, and how these things will lead toward knee and ankle injuries — which has been discussed on here a good bit, but he has a more detailed breakdown I thought may be interesting for others to check out.

I trust Aaron Nelson and his crew will be doing the most they can to mitigate these issues throughout Zion’s career.

If it were in Chinese, it’d make more sense

Too wordy?

I don’t really post much. Maybe tried too hard to provide some substance beyond the video link...

I’m an MD (not ortho) and this is very reasonable and knowledgeable take by this guy. But consider this is all based on observations and not on any physical examination or imaging studies.

I’ve noticed Zion’s rather bizarre gait before but never linked it to an injury risk. However what this guy says in the video does make sense. Zion probably could stand to lose anywhere from 20-25 pounds to help minimize injury risk.

Yeah. He has a disclaimer in the video description saying as much.

The 250-260 range everyone is throwing around is probably a good weight for him to play at. Every pound less is going to make a difference when it comes to the forces on his knees.

Yea I said he’s a resident physician. He isn’t even qualified to practice in his specialty much less diagnose someone from a ten second cellphone video

I respect his opinion but forgive me if I trust that many other doctors, scouts, and GMs have thought about this and didn’t have a problem drafting him #1

I guess I missed the part where he said anything about not drafting Zion with the #1 pick.

Someone can breakdown why a player is at an elevated injury risk without saying they’re overvalued, etc...

The scientific and anatomical background information that he provided in the video are correct. However, he does not do a very good job of applying that information to Zion. He took one very quick video of him walking And made a lot of large conclusions.

There are a few big problems with this. First, the video is not filmed straight on so it is very difficult to determine if there is any knee valgus or if Zion is simply turning the corner. He does not examine any video of Zion running or jumping. He takes one 3 second video of a post move and states that Zion “has an aggressive and physical style.” We could have video of any number of guys bigger than Zion making that same move.

Many people have abnormal gait patterns. However, unless it is caused by an underlying issue such as muscle weakness or tightness then an abnormal gait pattern would have minimal affect on athletic performance. For example, Lebron has a very unique gait pattern as well. He also happens to be the most physically similar player (size and athleticism) to Zion. He has played for 16 seasons without a major injury.

I think that this guy did a poor job overall of relating the medical symptoms that he talked about to Zion specifically with regards to his specific athletic performance. His basic conclusion is that Zion has an abnormal gait pattern, but not an abnormal running or landing pattern, and is at risk because he weighs more than most basketball players.
