Hardwood Paroxysm @HPbasketball 16 minutes ago

Want to get five Mavs fans and five Pelicans fans in a room to talk about Al-Farouq Aminu.

The best part is the biggest thing the Pelicans need is exactly what Mavs fans love that AFA is giving them, but Pels fans refuse to concede

And yet he’s doing in Dallas what they need in New Orleans RT @BreesInDaCut: @HPbasketball im pretty sure nobody here misses Aminu

ya see? crazy RT @PappaJoegio: Aminu is garbage. I'm completely satisfied with QPon, has many intangibles that AFA couldn't dream of.

They have the 7th best offense in the NBA. RT @MunirTheGreat: @HPbasketball don't the pelicans need spacing?

“THE SPACING WON’T ANYONE THINK OF THE SPACING!” You’re 7th in offense and 26th in defense. Where do you think your need is?

While I agree with the general principle that defense is the biggest problem, specifically our porous perimeter defense, Chief ain't shutting down the long list of quick combo guards that have gone off on the Pels since Jrue went down.

We are missing Aminu... I would rather a random fan every night get a spot on the bench then Aminu.

Yeah I have really never understood why Matt Moore thinks Aminu would help us so much. Aminu has a very specific skill set/role and the Mavs are using it right because they have the players (a lot of good shooters) to surround him with. Think of an offense featuring Asik, Tyreke and Aminu all at once. That would be a complete dumpster fire.

aminu's destiny is small-ball power forward
could we use him? yes
but dallas has better shooters to play along side him

I don't have to think of it, we saw it last year with Stiemsma in Asik's place. But again I think the flawed thinking is 2 fold. First thinking Aminu is a significantly better defender than Cunningham. I'll concede better rebounder but I don't think they're that far off in terms of defending the 3/4. Second, Aminu defends the 3/4 and our problem has been stopping 1/2. Giannis was always going to get his last night, the problem was giving MCW enough open 15 footers to make him look like a good shooter which he isn't.

I fail to understand how he doesn't see the spacing issue.

Qpon/dante are just more competent players and he's missing the fact that the mavs have a lot more veteran leaders. Qpon's exp is very valuable and he can hit a 3 at least.

Further flawed thinking, Moore points out how Dallas' top defensive lineups feature Aminu, as evidence of Aminu's game changing defense. We had Aminu last season and still had a bottom 5 defense. Season before that too.

And I'm not trying to rip on Moore, he's one of the few national guys that actually watches the Pels regularly and gives thoughtful commentary on them, I just think he's very wrong on this point.

This is very silly. Our season started turning when we acquired Dante. Then got better before the Davis injury with QPon. Now we are playing our best basketball after acquiring Cole. It's not always about stats. The team is just plain smarter since these 3 arrived.

Yeah we pretty much have the exact same thoughts on this. Matt Moore is probably my favorite national guy, but I just think he is wrong here. Also I know what happened last year with the Steamer, I just try to block out the fact that he played for this team.

It really doesn't take much effort to go look up the jump from NOP to DAL for Aminu or the decline for certain players like Cunningham.

I think this is being pretty poorly argued on both sides. Moore is basically saying Pels are good on offense, bad on defense and Aminu is good on defense. It's just not that simple, he doesn't defend the position that's killing us.

Last 5 losses leading scorers

Boston - Isaiah Thomas 27
Dallas - Ellis with 20, Rondo with 19
Orlando - Oladipo 22
Indy - George Hill 17, David West 17
Utah - Gordon Hayward 32

So in the last 5 losses Aminu would have been helpful slowing down Gordon Hayward. I'd probably give him a shot at Oladipo too. The other guys that lead their teams to victory over the Pels are small combo guards and that isn't really his area of expertise.

But also the Pels were bad on defense last year too. So Moore's argument that they are 26th in defense this year doesn't help. They were 25th last year. Whooptie fricking doo

And the year before. This is another stupid internet "My hypothetical best case scenario > Your IRL results"

He also undermined his argument by responding to a "we're missing Holiday" with "the defense was bad before he went down." He's an admitted Holiday fan and says he's a plus defender, but somehow where Jrue failed to make our team defense good, Aminu will succeed, even though he failed to do so the past 2 years.

precisely. Too bad you only get about 125 characters when tweeting to him otherwise it would be a lot easier to have this conversation. Every time I bring up points like this to Moore he never responds. Oh well.
