I’ll be interested to see what he looks like.

By all accounts he still has the speed, but the issue will be can he expand his bag? Gain enough strength to finish through contact, hit open threes, and run an offense?

He’s the quintessential raw guard that has the superior athleticism to his more skilled peers, and you are banking on him developing those skills and leapfrogging them, but if he never develops them then he’s just a guy that can move quick vertically with the ball and that doesn’t get you very far at this level.

Tyrese has 1000 times better game speed than Kira bc he actually knows how to use it.

I wonder what Kira’s role will even be. I see him sitting next to Jaxson on the bench.

It would be an enormous mistake to play him over Naji.

Graham is actually playing a nice little controlled role this year too. So I wouldn’t play him over Graham either. I’d rather Graham get those 3 open looks from 3 a game than Kira. Graham has also been great about accepting his role. Play hard D, move the ball on O, shoot 2-3 wide open 3’s a game.

Just checked to confirm my eye test and Graham’s ast to turnover ratio is 5-1. I don’t see what playing Kira over him adds most nights.

Kira was actually starting to play very well in the weeks leading up to his injury. He was in the verge of taking the starting job from Graham imo

Agreed. I loved seeing his progression. In the 10 games before his injury he was averaging 8ppg in only 16mpg. Not bad. Only 1 turnover in his last 7 games as well. He also was only like 20 years old, I think we kind of forget that too.

Barring injury or trade, I think he mostly becomes the forgotten guy.

Garbage minutes, and 4 or 5 spot minutes here or there, but never enough to really earn more minutes and a spot in the rotation.

I think that's how it plays out. But seasons are long and injuries are guaranteed, so he should get some run at some point.

The eye test and 3P% above 40% says Graham has rehabbed his value to neutral contract, but he's got a -9.7 NetRtg this season. If he's playing his role well and is a net negative, he needs to go out in trade if you can find a taker.

The question is where is the competition. Is it Dyson and Kira both going after Graham's minutes, or is Dyson in competition with Naji and Kira is in line to take Graham's minutes?

He's also playing a lot of minutes with our worst players.

All of Temple's minutes have been with Graham on the floor. He's also Jax's #1 2-man lineup in terms of minutes, and Willy's #3.

There's also a lot of weird things going on with small sample size, like our defense being elite with Zion on the court and awful when he's off. It's all just noise at 12 games in.

The problem with that theory is that the other top 7-8 guys worst NetRtg in 2 man lineups is with Graham. He’s the common denominator.

However, I think the issue (and hopefully another GM agrees) has more to do with roster construction as he keeps sharing the floor with other small guards in CJ or Jose, plus we don’t have enough good defenders to hide him on that end of the floor no matter the combinations.

With that said, I fully agree the sample size is too small to make a final judgment.

Yep, that's definitely fair.

Basically this. I know some love to blindly hate on Graham but his play hasn't really translated to having this terrible Net Rating. It's the same as the Zion example, need more games to see some of that normalize a bit in the on/off type and lineup data.

It's obviously clear that Jose needs more minutes which likely comes from Graham, and I think we'll be shopping Graham by the deadline which is probably a good thing, but I don't think Graham should be entirely out of the rotation at this point.

1 thing I noticed, out of 213 minutes from Graham this season, 50 of those have been with Jose on the floor..why?

Because Jose is a creator, and Graham is best in catch-and-shoot situations.

I also agree, though, that Graham should see a smaller role in the rotation, but he shouldn't be completely out of it until Willie thinks that Dyson is ready for a regular rotation spot (why that isn't already the case is another story).
