Yep, that was Joe’s thought too, except it wasn’t a great year. Yes he scored 20 ppg as an undersized guard, on a sh*tty team that didn’t play competitive basketball, he accumulated stats on a bad team in garbage time. It was an awful move. Washington wanted off of him less than a year after they signed him to a big contract. That’s red flag No 1; the rest of the league considered his contract untraceable; that’s red flag No 2.
Not to mention we drafted Fears and traded for Murray, and had Jose on roster, where are the minutes for those 4. Just blocking playing time for Fears.
Yes Bey was a nice surprise, but that deal was bad. Can’t be defended because they got lucky on a throw in player coming off an injury.

Ironically enough Devonte Graham would be a better example of a bad player taking inefficient shots. Poole that year was averaging a career high in points, assists, steals, and 3 point shooting percentage. Let alone him already being a champion.
Fears, Murray, Jose are PGs. Poole is a 2 who can play the 1. Jose was not always going to be in the plans. Murray is a guide for fears (Ala CP3/SGA, CP3/Booker, Lowry/VanVleet) The kid is 19 years old. He’s supposed to be getting drafted this year. A year already under his belt, he is fine. A prominent backup role to continue his development.

But even with Poole’s “great” year, the team that signed him 2 years prior wanted off his contract and the rest of the league said “no thank you,” and Dumars said “yes please.”
His “great year” is the definition of a decent player on a terrible team putting up good numbers.
I liked the Murray move. Never saw the reason to bring in another combo guard like Poole especially not on an albatross of a contract.
Jose will always be an instant energy sub. He is a gritty and winning player. Poole is neither of those things. His best role was his role on a great Warrior team, bench offense and his offense fit their system perfectly.
I think Dumars thought, we need shooting. Poole can shoot. That was his only thought and he made a bad move.

Did you watch him play? He was playing on a terrible team and had a green light to simply continue to chuck shots. He averaged 16 shots in 29 minutes and was fortunate enough to hit a higher percentage of the 9 3s a game he took. His defense has never been good and he averaged 3 turnovers a game. Not sure why Weaver wanted him when CJ was on an expiring which was more valuable.
