Is it just wishful thinking on my part that the way he said he has to give 100% on working out to get stronger sounded like he hadn't taken strength training seriously in the past?

It was close grip bench press (for the triceps) , so the weight is actually decent considering he's repping it out and especially since his arms are probably pretty long.
