Good defender with a mean streak who can occasionally hit a corner 3 if left open?

No. Portis is 6’10”.

Jones is 6’7”.

They play different positions

They project as completely different players.

Portis is a true big: 6'10" 250, Herb is a wing/forward: 6'7" 210

Portis is a high usage offensive player with a good scoring repertoire.
Herb can score a little, but way more of his offensive production is in transition.

Portis can legitimately shoot. 38% for his career and he has pretty good gravity for a big.

Herb shot 35% this year in college, but that was because teams left him wide open. Zero gravity. Think Rondo 3 point attempts.

Herb is a way better ballhandler/passer. He has point forward skills. Portis doesn't do much in those areas. He's not going to lead a break after grabbing a rebound.

Herb needs to add a little bulk, but he should be a better/more versatile defender than Portis. Portis was BBQ chicken when he got isolated against Trae Young and the like this year. Herb can move his feet and has really long arms, so he will be able to hold his own when switched on a smaller player.

I think Herb could potentially develop into a Thad Young type of player, which would be a really good outcome for a 2nd rounder.

I think his ceiling is both different and much higher. He reminds me of Matisse Thybulle with an alpha dog mentality and leadership qualities. Not sure how that looks in the modern NBA as his shot is terrible. He moves pretty well around the court. He's not a "big man" and won't be playing in the post - hes a wing who can pass, run, and handle the ball well. If he had a shot at all, he'd be a top 10 draft pick.

I'm higher on him than a lot of people, I feel like he was an absolute steal, and should get real playing time in his rookie year.

His Ceiling to me is a more athletic Joe Ingles. His shot isn’t quite there but he doesn’t have any major flaws in form, just needs the reps. He also has a good handle and create for others. I’m optimistic he can be a good role player for years to come with us

He reminds me of Danilo Gallinari but with more athletecism and defensive potential, without the step backs/ 3pt & foul hunting shooting abilities. Maybe a bigger but little less fleet-of-foot Shai-Gilgeous Alexander, not sure the same spot up ability. Honestly not so dissimilar to Scottie Barnes. Maybe not as good off-ball or at that same level of IQ/knack for the game, but Herb's IS high make no mistake. I see some Jrue offense too, but again, at a bigger and more athletic profile. i think there's every reason in the world to be excited about him. Pretty complete 2 way player in my eyes.

i wasn't being sarcastic. im not comparing career outlooks or effectiveness in this league, im comparings the tools, attack styles, etc. He obviously doesn't stroke it like Gallo and SGA, maybe the best he can hope for is to only ever shoot as well as Jrue, idk. But watch young Gallo and those guys. They all attack well with the dribble and in the paint, are able to maintain their dribble, keep options for passing or scoring alive, play methodically, under control etc., but still make quick decisions.
