I hear a lot of the local guys alluding to this, and I believe Shamit was one of the ones saying he heard this. But it’s almost like no one wants to go out and say it point blank.

Something about timing and needing to actually have a pick to swap. Supposedly we would have to trade the 23 pick unprotected, or make the swap with the Lakers pre trade and then protect. But we can’t say, top four protected and still retain the option for it to be the higher of the two picks.

It makes sense in a way, but do we know this to be fact?

Edit: sorry if this has already been covered thoroughly somewhere else.

You can protect it, however before you trade the 2023 pick you have to declare whether you will swap it or not.

I believe he alluded to a team source on that. I haven’t looked up the rules but he’s usually pretty good on this type of info. If he says we have to execute the swap in advance to protect it then that is a limitation and probably means we won’t be trading the 2023 pick.

That’s basically where I’m at. I put it at zero percent that we would even consider trading an unprotected 2023 pick. And if we don’t have a 2023 pick to trade, it gets much more complicated to make any big deals. Not impossible, but much more difficult.

I think that may be why Naji’s name surfaced this week. It seems like Naji is the kind of player that has more value to the Pels than the rest of the league for intangible reasons. Why would the Pels even think about trading him unless he has late 1st round pick value and they need that as part of a package to get a bigger fish.
